The post holder should be dynamic and passionate about delivering exceptional eye care. Applicants should have previous experience in Ophthalmology.
The post holder will be able to autonomously undertake assessment examination in order to implement management plans for ophthalmic patients.
* Demonstrate highly developed specialist ophthalmic knowledge, practical skills and procedures, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant clinical skills
* Autonomously manage identified case lists for patients requiring assessment, treatment and review, consulting with senior clinicians as necessary.
* To work closely with the Nurse Leader, multidisciplinary teams and operational managers to provide high quality and cost-effective patient focused services as part of the department management team.
* Participate in the delivery of formal and informal teaching for the department staff and act as a resource for education and development within the service.
Main duties of the job
* Work collaboratively with the nursing team to deliver ophthalmic nursing services in accordance with the NMC Code and Trust policies.
* Work collaboratively with the departmental team to deliver the ophthalmology service in accordance with the Trust policies, procedures and protocols ensuring that the service is delivered within the allocated resources.
* Record, maintain and store an accurate record system in line with trust information governance guidance and collect relevant statistical information for the purpose of evaluating patient care.
* Develop and act as a lead, developing nurse-led clinics deemed suitable by the clinical lead, Service manager and Matron through innovation and research based change in practice.
* Be expected to communicate with staff at all levels throughout the organisation and external agencies as well as patients, visitors and general public.
* Require motivational, negotiating, persuasion, empathising, counselling and reassurance skills.
* Liaise with and provide relevant information to other members of the multi disciplinary team, to ensure that patients attending the department receive high quality care.
* Required to overcome communication barriers with patients and the general public displaying emotional crisis, vulnerability, verbal/physical aggression, learning difficulties and language barriers.
* Ability to cope with frequently challenging, diverse and stressful situations.
* Practice and demonstrate the ability to manage own workload as well as supervising junior colleague

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Essential criteria
* NMC registered Nurse or AHP equivalent Physical examination course or willingness to work towards
* Evidence of postgraduate Ophthalmic qualification
* Evidence of non-medical prescribing qualification or willingness to work towards
* Management/ Leadership qualification or willingness to work towards
* Has undertaken Enhanced Assessment Skills in clinical practice, or willingness to work towards
* Recognised teaching and assessing qualification
* Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
* Recent experience of working within an Ophthalmology department
* Evidence of building effective working relationships with members of the multidisciplinary team and other key stakeholders
* Evidence of undertaking audit/research
* Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology and symptoms of eye disease, including presentation, treatment and management of ophthalmic conditions.
* Knowledge of ophthalmic drugs including its indication, side effects, adverse effects and potential interaction to other drugs
* Demonstrate an understanding of refraction and biometry and interpretation of diagnostic test results
* A good understanding of clinical governance and incident reporting
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Essential criteria
* Proficiency on recognising ophthalmic emergencies
* Proficiency of managing triage for emergency eye conditions and general ophthalmic advice
* Proficiency on cannulation and intravenous drug administration
* Proficiency on pachymetry and visual fields
* Self-motivated and able to work under own initiative and prioritise workload
* Demonstrates ability to use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate patient care
* Able to supervise nonregistered and less experienced staff to ensure effective service and care delivery
* Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety
* Demonstrates ability to keep up to date with professional issues that influence nursing practice relating to area of clinical practice, management, education and research
