Job Purpose

Based out of our Los Angeles office, the Senior Vice President is responsible for executing the strategic and creative vision of the BBC Studios Los Angeles unscripted productions from the development phase through final delivery, reporting into the Executive Vice President of Production.

The SVP will work on multiple projects concurrently, often with large budgets and significant reputational value. The candidate will be solution oriented, profit driven and provide oversight, logistical skills, and strong, visible leadership to everyone working on their shows, and play an executive role as part of the wider department.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Supervise operations of pilots and series in production as assigned by the EVP of Production.
  • Create and manage project budgets and schedules and communicate key assumptions across a variety of genres.
  • Assist in hiring and managing show EICs/Line Producers and other key personnel. Contribute to Above the Line negotiations.
  • Provide supervision to the production department and freelance teams to ensure all programs deliver on schedule, within budget, and that deliveries to the Commissioner, S&D and BBCS Formats are fulfilled. Encourage and support the highest possible creative standards throughout the process.
  • Liaison with all BBC Studios LA departments; including Finance, Business and Legal Affairs, Communications, IT and Human Resources. Work closely with the Development and Current Programming departments to ensure a successful production process through development, pre-production, production, post production and final delivery.
  • Maintain production management client relationships; manage & negotiate budgets, financial reports and breakage requests for assigned shows.
  • Demonstrate practical judgement and leadership - to ensure our freelance teams work to deadlines and are supported sufficiently to deliver their best work. Create and support a positive environment.
  • Manage talent relations, duty of care and an elevated talent experience. Track casting, diligence and talent booking process.
  • Take a lead role in assessing risk and managing high standards of safety on set.
  • Maintain and grow international production reach and stay informed on both global and domestic tax incentive programs. Build relationships with BBC Studios production offices worldwide. Proactively strategize on best filming locations to model and budget during early project development.
  • Assist with quarterly and fiscal year projections.
  • Proactively strategize and deliver alternate revenue stream opportunities.
  • Take a lead role in driving forward all projects, new and efficient ways of working and collaborating with other departments.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of industry trends, innovations and the evolving market and distribution platforms in order to adapt the business to audience needs.
  • A commitment to creating both diverse content and teams to reflect our audiences and ensure best practice.
  • Foster team growth.
  • Work closely with Global Formats team during development of BBC Formats and on site.
  • On location supervision, as needed, for assigned shows in production.
  • Manage project cash flows, payment schedules, and invoicing processes with the Finance team to ensure timely incoming and outgoing payments.
  • Liaison with the Business & Legal Affairs team and confer with production counsel on all applicable legal matters such as guild, labor, compliance and immigration advice.
  • Work closely with post production facilities, clearance teams and finishing vendors.
  • Oversee team management of show assets, storage needs, masters and data.
  • Negotiate and manage deals with preferred vendors for productions, maintain relationships.
  • Champion show marketing, promotion, social and award strategy.
  • Assist with brand partnerships, integrations and sponsorships.
  • Prepare and lead BBC Studios project kick-offs, ensuring all freelance teams receive BBC policies and trainings.
  • Ensure production and creative teams comply with key BBC policies including Editorial Guidelines, The Pledge, Data Security, Anti-Bribery and Corruption, Duty of Care, Ethical Policy, Risk Assessment, Health & Safety and Incident Reporting.
  • Support BBC's sustainability initiatives and green production practices.
  • Provide guidance and advice to international BBC Studios territories filming in North America.

Knowledge, Skills. Training and Experience

  • 10+ years of Unscripted Production Executive experience.
  • Strong track record of delivering high quality content on schedule and on budget. Experience overseeing high-profile productions across multiple platforms and different budget ranges.
  • Practical production experience with a wide variety of unscripted genres (e.g. Game, Competition, Docu-Follow, Awards, Variety, Documentary). Project expertise across location and studio based shows, union and non-union, and domestic and international.
  • Excellent budgeting skills and extremely proficient in Movie Magic Budgeting and Cost Reporting.
  • Places importance on advocating and maintaining a positive working environment for talent and crew.
  • A strong communicator and track record of developing and maintaining productive working relationships with internal and external partners, including, co-producers, network and streaming partners, agents and talent.
  • Effective planning, attention to detail and organization skills. Ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, prioritizing, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Extensive experience of leading and inspiring production teams in a multi-platform environment and able to demonstrate strong managerial skills and positive behaviors.
  • Has the ability to identify a range of problems and work alongside the executive team to apply effective conversations and solutions. Able to make sound judgement decisions on time critical solutions.
  • A track record of executing the creative vision from conception to reality within the constraints of limited resources and challenging deadlines.
  • Financial acumen and a strong sense of driving best value. Able to manage budgets, control costs and maximize value across all expenditure.
  • Sound understanding of the media industry including audience trends and how it is developing with new technologies and platforms.
  • Proven ability to negotiate and manage commercial and contractual relationships with third party suppliers and partners. Knowledge of development and production service agreement language and third party contracts.
  • An understanding of insurance policies, risk assessments and best safety practices.
  • High proficiency and experience across post production.
  • Experience working with compliance and standards & practices.
  • General knowledge of global tax incentive offerings, application submission and processing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook), Movie Magic Budgeting, Synchronize/Box/Dropbox, DocuSign, Zoom/Teams/Google Meet.

Compensation

The anticipated annual base salary for this position is $250,000 to $300,000. This range is not inclusive of a competitive bonus, flexible, hybrid working schedule & benefits including but not limited to: 100% BBCS covered medical & dental insurance, vision, & 401k match. The actual base salary offered depends on the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and geographic location of the position.
