About The Role
A Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position is available full time for 12 months to contribute to the development and validation of a multi‑functional, multi‑purpose quantitative tool for dermal physiologically‑based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelling.
Background: Topical drug products undergo substantial metamorphosis upon skin application, altering their composition and properties. The project aims to extend an existing PBPK model to incorporate these metamorphic events, enabling better prediction of drug absorption and support for bioequivalence decisions. This multi‑institution collaborative grant is funded by the US‑FDA and involves partners such as the University of Reading, the Colorado School of Mines, Simulations Plus, and the FDA.
Key Responsibilities
* Formulate and test series of drug‑vehicle combinations to generate data informing metamorphosis and modelling.
* Characterise formulations through stability, solubility, pH, viscosity, microscopy, and other relevant tests.
* Conduct in‑vitro permeation (IVPT) studies to assess skin permeation of drugs and excipients, including start‑up, residual and transition phases.
* Investigate the linkage between permeation data, metamorphosis events and formulation properties.
* Analyse and process quantitative data, develop and validate HPLC or alternative analytical methods.
* Participate in monthly stakeholder meetings, presenting results and gathering background information for data interpretation.
* Contribute to scientific outputs, including conference presentations and peer‑reviewed publications.
* Ensure compliance with University of Bath policies, health & safety, research integrity and SOPs.
Qualifications
Applicants should have first‑hand experience with micro‑ and macro‑testing techniques for skin permeation and formulation development, including solubility and stability studies and quantitative HPLC analysis. A strong understanding of pharmaceutical sciences in drug delivery across biological barriers and topical product formulation is advantageous. Demonstrated capacity for independent research, technical reporting and efficient data presentation is required.
