Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Paediatric Physiotherapist with broad experience across all areas of Paediatrics. The successful candidate will be skilled in completing musculoskeletal / neurological / neurodevelopmental and respiratory assessments in a wide range of highly complex, rare conditions. We are part of the wider physiotherapy department and sit within the neurology physiotherapy team.

This post is part of an established physiotherapy service, consisting of a Band 8 metabolic and dermatology clinical specialist, a band 7 metabolic and endocrine specialist and a rotational band 6 physiotherapist.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide a highly specialist physiotherapy service for children and young people (0-18 years) presenting with metabolic conditions both as in and out-patients working closely with the metabolic team. It is anticipated that the physiotherapist would play a key role in the MDT and liaising with local therapy services.

In addition they will provide holistic physiotherapy care to children admitted to the medical wards (renal, urology, metabolic, endocrine, gastroenterology) with a broad range of underlying complex conditions.

We are a forward thinking and dynamic team who are involved in MDT research and teaching. Good communication skills and team working abilities are essential for this post. You will be working closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team and physiotherapy colleagues to deliver a coordinated and holistic management including neurological and musculoskeletal input for children with complex and potentially long term conditions.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training


Essential criteria

* Health Professional Council registration
* Degree or equivalent qualification in Physiotherapy


Desirable criteria

* Evidence of relevant CPD including attendance at relevant postgraduate courses
* Member of appropriate Clinical interest Group ( APCP)
* Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy


Experience/Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Broad grounding in physiotherapy within an NHS setting with an understanding of professional issues and NHS reforms, and their implications for paediatric services.
* Significant post graduate experience in acute paediatrics to include children with complex disability as well as neurological, musculoskeletal and respiratory conditions
* Experience of organising input to a specific unit and contributing to the general running of a department
* Knowledge of functional and developmental assessments, adaptive equipment or orthotics to improve function
* Previous experience of clinical governance audit and research
* Supervision of physiotherapist, students and assistants
* Ability to undertake on call and weekend duties including being resident if required to meet 30 min on call response time


Skills/Abilities


Essential criteria

* Highly advanced clinical skills in paediatric physiotherapy, including neurodevelopment assessment, handling and treatment skills.
* Ability to work as a part of both a physiotherapy and multidisciplinary team
* Able to motivate and develop others.
* Good communication skills across the age ranges and ability to work with and teach patients and families
* Able to prioritise workload using time management and delegation skills
* Computer literate, able to work within an electronic patient record
* Good teaching and presentation skills to other staff members
* Assessing children for the appropriate provision of orthotics, splints and equipment to aid function and management
