Job overview

To be professionally accountable for the maintenance of standards of professional practice as set by the appropriate regulatory body applicable to your profession or role.

To work within the theatre department and support the Practice Development Practitioner with the assessment of training needs and subsequent development and delivery of training programmes including local induction, in-house training and on-going educational and clinical development programmes for healthcare students, TSA's, Nurses and ODP's.

The post holder will liaise with theatre staff and be responsible for the provision of continuing education and training in the clinical area and assessing clinical practice.

Main duties of the job

To assist the Professional Development Practitioner (PDP) with the identification, planning, co-ordination, delivery and evaluation of educational opportunities, programmes and activities for theatre staff and students.

To teach a wide range of practical and theoretical sessions to all levels of theatre staff in the clinical settings.

To develop teaching and learning materials and use a variety of teaching and support methods to meet the differing needs of theatre staff and students.

Provide support to clinical staff and students within the clinical setting with regard to their ongoing learning and professional development.

Undertake individual action planning with students and clinical staff, and formally assess progress, providing management reports as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Education

To assist the Professional Development Practitioner (PDP) with the identification, planning, co-ordination, delivery and evaluation of educational opportunities, programmes and activities for theatre staff and students.

To teach a wide range of practical and theoretical sessions to all levels of theatre staff in the clinical settings.

To develop teaching and learning materials and use a variety of teaching and support methods to meet the differing needs of theatre staff and students.

Provide support to clinical staff and students within the clinical setting with regard to their ongoing learning and professional development, under the direction of the Professional Development Practitioner.

Undertake individual action planning with students and clinical staff, and formally assess progress, providing management reports as required under direction of the PDP.

Provide clear and appropriate feedback to staff and students.

Report progress to the PDP informing immediately of any serious concerns for clinical practice.

Maintain accurate records of training, assessment and support provided, and provide reports as requested.

Act as a resource for clinical staff and students, providing specialist advice on general theatre practice.

Ensure that patient care and procedures are carried out in accordance with Trust policies, and nursing guidelines and practices, and that professional and clinical standards are maintained.

Participate in educational and clinical audits and/or benchmarking for clinical practice, and assist with data collection for research purposes.

Participate in disseminating audit / benchmarking results to relevant parties, and the monitoring of any subsequent action plans.

Management

To effectively manage their own time to achieve efficiency.

To provide written reports relating to training, assessment and/or support provided, as requested by the PDP or Senior theatre managers.

Attend and contribute to nursing / education and other relevant meetings as requested by the PDP or Senior theatre managers.

Work collaboratively with other clinical education staff employed within the Trust.

Professional

To work within The Code - NMC Professional standards of practice
and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates 2018.
and nursing associates or HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics 2024.

To demonstrate an exemplary standard of theatre practice and act as a role model to others.

Maintain a smart appearance and professional image at all times, wearing Trust uniform in accordance with Trust policy.

Comply with Trust policies and practices.

Keep up to date with evidence based clinical practices.

Keep up to date with professional issues in nursing and the NHS.

Attend Trust Mandatory training / updates.

Maintain own professional development.


Person specification

* HCPC or NMC registration
* Post-registration theatre experience
* Theatre skills - Anaesthetics/Scrub/Recovery
* Degree level study or working towards
* PGCert qualification or working towards
* IT skills with Microsoft Office package - excel/word/powerpoint
* Teaching and/or presentation experience
* Able to manage own time to meet targets and deadlines
* Ability to communicate with multi-levels of learners
