Title: Primary Design Engineer (Substations) Job Type: Permanent Location: North East (4 days office expectation initially) Projects: Substation construction works up to 132kV Salary: 64k-72k market leading package Key Responsibilities: * Preparation of concept substation designs at pre-sanction stage. Identifying the engineering design merits of alternative scheme variants/options. * Working closely with fellow Engineering Designers/other departments on a project-by-project basis * Managing design workload effectively, identifying where project-specific design work can best be carried out by junior team members and briefing accordingly. * Responding promptly to queries arising from site during construction phase. * Ensuring compliance of design output with DNO policy where applicable * Identifying the safety implications of decisions made at design stage on the constructability, operation, maintenance and final decommissioning of substation asset. * Physical design of indoor and open-terminal substations (preparation of substation layouts and associated detailed mechanical drawings/ schedules) * Providing design outputs for Protection and Control Panel & Scheme Designs from 11kV to 132kV. * Develop a comprehensive suite of design drawings for Grid and Primary substations. * Prepare technical specifications and associated electrical designs for new substation projects ranging from 11kV to 132kV. * Produce feasibility reports, layouts, general arrangements (GAs), and plant specifications including transformers and switchgear. * Review designs from suppliers and clients to ensure technical compliance with current legislation and policies. * Liaise with engineering teams to help identify, communicate, and manage Health and Safety risks and hazards within the team. * Attend site meetings to support design or requirement changes during project construction. * Align project design works with program schedules, quality standards, and margin objectives. * Write, maintain, and own technical specifications and guidance notes for substation design, Transmission network interfaces, auxiliary systems and substation earthing systems. Update existing specifications based on project lessons and technological developments. Qualifications and Experience: * HNC in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. * Minimum of 2 years of experience in electrical design, specification, and application of transmission voltage substations. * Ability to technically assess and solve issues, with a thorough understanding of the technical requirements for the design, planning, operation, and development of the transmission substations. * In-depth knowledge of ENA Standards, National Grid, British and European Standards for substation design * Good Knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations (including CDM Regulations) applicable to the design and operation of high voltage substations. * Experience in the design, manufacturing, testing, installation, or maintenance of transmission voltage plant and equipment is advantageous. * Ideally you will have experience in preparing and manipulating engineering drawings, using computer-aided design tools (e.g. AutoCAD) as this is the main tool we use; however, for a promising candidate who is able and willing to gain these skills rapidly, this may not be a barrier. * Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence and be willing to travel and participate in site meetings throughout the UK when necessary About applying: If you feel you are an ideal fit for this vacancy and would like to hear more about the specifics of the role, please do not hesitate to apply by clicking the ‘Apply’ button or sending me your most up-to-date CV
