The National Spinal Injuries Centre is a world-renowned specialist national centre for people with spinal cord injury – a centre that’s life-changing for everyone who comes into contact with it and the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Ward Sister / Charge Nurse within the NSIC on St. George ward, which is one of our adult rehabilitation wards. Applicants must be highly motivated with excellent communication skills that enjoy working in a challenging and, at times.

With an interest in spinal cord injury, ideal candidates must be self-driven, energised, and always strive to provide a high standard of nursing care, and provide motivation and direction for their nursing team, ensuring that they are an advocate for their patient cohort.

Self-awareness, strong interpersonal skills, and a proactive approach to professional development are also essential. Looking to the future, the Trust will support those individuals that want to challenge themselves and become the leaders of the profession.

As a Ward Sister / Charge Nurse your role is to work closely with the multidisciplinary team, to facilitate quality patient centred care

The successful candidate will be actively involved in unit management and will be supported in developing management skills. You must have excellent communication, motivation, and teaching and leadership skills. Experience in the care of complex patients and rehabilitation would be desirable.

Main duties of the job

The post holder under the leadership of the Matron has a continuing responsibility for the day-to-day operational management of St George ward

He/she will ensure the delivery of a high quality, evidence-based and cost-effective service for patients and their families combining clinical expertise with innovative, dynamic nursing leadership.

The post holder will manage and lead the St George Ward nursing and support staff in their professional and practice development.

The post holder will need to demonstrate excellent communication and problem-solving skills to meet the challenges of the Trust/hospital.

They will work between Monday and Friday and act as National Spinal Injuries Centre bleep holders on a rotational basis.

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria

1. Registered Nurse (Adult)
2. Degree in related field (or equivalent experience)
3. Relevant post registration experience
4. Completion of appropriate management and leadership programme
5. Related clinical experience at Band 6
6. Teaching and Assessment recognised qualification

Desirable criteria

7. Recognised advance communication skills
8. Working towards Master in relating subject or willing to complete

Experience

Essential criteria

9. Significant experience as a Deputy Ward Manager
10. Previous experience as shift/team leader
11. Specialist requirements - clear commitment to promoting the care of spinal cord injured patients
12. Experience of teaching students, HCA's and qualified staff

Desirable criteria

13. Experience of managing ward budgets
14. Experience of recruitment staff

15. Able to travel to other sites and off site as necessary
