Offer description

We are supporting a leading, independent construction consultancy who are currently recruiting a Senior Quantity Surveyor to support National Grid’s Grain to Tilbury project, a critical element of The Great Grid Upgrade - the largest overhaul of UK electricity network in generations. This project will replace the existing 1960s Thames Cable Tunnel between Tilbury and Gravesend and deliver vital new infrastructure to strengthen the UK’s high-voltage transmission network.

The role will support the delivery phase of the project, encompassing the construction of a new 2.2km tunnel beneath the River Thames, installation of new 400kV cabling, construction of headhouses at each end of the tunnel, and associated reconductoring works along existing overhead line routes. This upgrade is essential to enabling secure, cleaner, and more affordable energy to flow through the national grid.

This is a site-focused role based in Kent, with flexibility where appropriate, offering the opportunity to work on a technically complex, high-profile energy infrastructure project that has received full planning approval and is moving into active delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Lead commercial management activities across the Grain to Tilbury project during construction and delivery phases

Prepare and manage cost plans, budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting for complex infrastructure works

Administer NEC3/NEC4 contracts, including compensation events, change control, and commercial risk management

Provide early warning of cost and programme risks, implementing mitigation strategies in collaboration with delivery teams

Act as a trusted commercial advisor to National Grid and project stakeholders

Work closely with contractors and multidisciplinary teams to resolve commercial and contractual matters

Support governance, reporting, and commercial assurance processes in line with National Grid requirements

Contribute to mentoring and development of junior commercial team members as required

Candidate Criteria

BSc in Quantity Surveying or equivalent

Chartered (MRICS) or actively working towards chartership

Proven experience as a Senior Quantity Surveyor on major infrastructure, energy, utilities, or tunnelling projects

Strong working knowledge of NEC3/NEC4 contracts, particularly in a delivery or construction environment

Excellent commercial awareness, including forecasting, change control, and risk management

Confident communicator with strong stakeholder and contractor management skills

Based in Kent or the surrounding region, with the ability to attend site as required

What’s on Offer

£75,000 salary + £5,000 car allowance

Opportunity to work on a flagship National Grid project forming part of The Great Grid Upgrade

Exposure to complex tunnelling and high-voltage transmission infrastructure

Long-term programme stability with a respected, growing consultancy

Clear career progression and professional development support
