Job overview

The postholder is required to contribute to the provision of a high quality, professional and cost-effective Medical Physics services to the Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will have responsibility for the provision of support to the Trust use of the Qaelum Patient Dose Management System, for training Medical Physicists, Clinical Technologists, Radiographers and other staff groups in the use of Qaelum at DCH, and for collaborating with the equivalent post holder at UHD to support the use of Qaelum across the county.


Main duties of the job

Participate in the periodic testing and annual radiation safety audit procedures on x-ray equipment as required by current legislation.

To carry out analysis on patient dose data using the Qaelum and PACS/CRIS systems and work with the MPE to write reports to the Medical Exposures Group.

Liaise with the MPE to carry out audit of patient doses in diagnostic radiology throughout all clinical services covered by the Medical Physics Service and to provide dose data for national databases. To investigate and analyse, using complex calculations, irregular patient doses and to make appropriate recommendations.

To provide a physics support service to users of audiological equipment.

Knowledge and Experience


Essential criteria

* Knowledge and understanding of the nature, use, risks and radiation protection of ionising radiations
* Knowledge and understanding of all the areas of legislation, approved codes and good guidance, applicable to the use of ionising radiations in the field of medical, dental, where appropriate
* Specialist knowledge of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of digital and analogue state of the art X-ray imaging equipment.
* Experience in medical physics and radiation protection. Analysing and interpreting highly complex and varied situations and judging measures required to assess performance, risk and benefit in comparison with relevant legislation, codes, guidance and standards.
* Specialist experience or awareness in the use of physics testing equipment and complex procedures employed to measure the application, performance and safety of a wide variety of X-ray and other ionising and non-ionising radiation equipment
* A level of understanding of clinical risks to patients, staff and public arising from ionising radiation exposure.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines e.g. IRR17, IR(ME)R2017, ACoP


Education, Qualifications and Training


Essential criteria

* Honours degree in physics or a relevant subject
* Relevant post graduate qualification (e.g. MSc Medical Physics)
* HCPC Registered Clinical Scientist (or eligible for Registration)


Desirable criteria

* Current Membership of a Professional Body.(e.g. IPEM)


Skills & Abilities


Essential criteria

* Able to write complex information in an accurate and concise way.
* Able to self-manage and to manage others
* Able to prioritise and manage own work.
* Good time management skills
* Able to use Excel, Word etc to set up documents and spreadsheets and extract information
* Able to carry out literature searches using various databases
* Able to lift medium weights
* Manual dexterity: ability to make accurate measurements using sophisticated testing equipment.
* Able to carry out the responsibilities of an Operator under the requirements of IR(ME)R
* Able to concentrate for prolonged periods when subject to unpredictable working patterns.
* Able to communicate complex information to non-specialists at all levels.
* Able to participate in Trust-wide meetings
* Able to train groups of other professional staff. Able to deliver teaching and training on complex subjects
* Understanding of the hazards and precautions required when working with ionising and non-ionising radiation.
* A clean UK driving licence.
