The Centre for Laboratory Medicine opened in June 2025 with one of the largest and most comprehensive automated track systems in the UK. Blood Sciences at Leeds is a global reference site for our Managed Service provider. The department processes around 15,000 patient samples each day and is constantly seeking to innovate using new technologies, IT and diagnostic methods to improve patient outcomes. This role offers the successful candidate an excellent opportunity to challenge themselves and to lead an exceptionally skilled and motivated Biomedical workforce. The department has a very engaged multi-disciplinary senior team and a well‑developed quality management system. The successful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific and clinical teams. The department is accredited to ISO15189 and by the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology.

What you will bring to the role

The successful candidate will be an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry. Educated to master’s level, the candidate will need to be able to demonstrate leadership abilities and knowledge within this specialist area. A management or leadership qualification is desirable, as is significant experience of Clinical Biochemistry, in coordinating quality management systems, and of leading large scientific teams through periods of change. Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills are a requirement of this role. The successful candidate will have operational responsibility for a busy 24/7 service delivered across two large teaching hospitals, therefore there will be a requirement to plan and organise a broad range of activities and programmes of work which will require the formulation of plans and strategies, applying professional judgements to highly technical and sometimes challenging situations. There will also be a need to ensure the service meets its financial targets and maintains compliance with relevant accreditation and regulatory bodies. Please see the attached job description for further information about this vacancy.
