Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

Under the supervision of the Area Manager, this position carries out habitat management projects and maintains infrastructure on Wildlife Management Areas and other DNR-owned or controlled properties within the Region, for the purpose of wildlife conservation, protection, and public recreation. Assists with the maintenance of a fleet of vehicles, equipment, boats, buildings and grounds, manages public access, and carries out wildlife research and monitoring projects as part of the Eastern Regional Operations Program. This position may respond independently to wildlife and public emergencies on and off WMA's requiring the employee to have a functional knowledge of handling diseased and injured wildlife, including deer and potentially rabid animals, and to maintain a current firearms certification. The position is also responsible for interaction with the public to inform them of public land opportunities, WMA rules, hunting seasons and bag limits, to resolve routine wildlife issues, and to direct them to appropriate contacts within WHS and other agencies.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service isseeking interested candidates for a Natural Resources Technician III position for LeCompte WMAlocated in Vienna, MD. This is semi-professional work related to managing wildlife resources, habitatand public recreation on public and private lands. Responsibilities will also include assisting withwildlife surveys, data collection, timely completion of administrative paperwork, and a variety of land,habitat, and facilities management activities on a network of wildlife management and managed hunting areas in the assigned region. Work activities may involve use of firearms, immobilization equipment, animal restraint devices,pesticide application equipment, participation in prescribed burning projects, heavy lifting, use of 4-wheel drive vehicles, atv / utv’s, agricultural/heavy equipment, and boats. The incumbent will be subjectto periodic adverse working conditions (hot / cold temperatures, rain / snow / ice, insects, mud, smoke,direct contact with wildlife, etc...).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:Four years of experience, two years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management and an additional two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries. Notes: 1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry,environmental science, technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, naturalscience, natural resources management, botany, marinebiology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field ofstudy and two years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience. 2.Candidates may substitute additional education beyond the 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience. 3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management andbiological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience operating farming or heavy equipment such as tractors, loaders, dozers, etc. withCommercial Class A or B driver’s license. Experience with animal capture techniques and the collection of biological data used to manage /monitor native wildlife populations. Possession of accredited Wildland fire training and/or experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employeesin this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
