While tattoos are permitted, including visible ones, they must not be deemed offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable unless for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
Everyone training to be a prison officer needs a suitable standard of hearing without the use of hearing aids. To work in a high-security prison (category A), you must have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
You will be invited to complete stage 1 of the online test to assess your judgement and numerical skills. If you pass, you'll proceed to stage 2, a task-based assessment. Successful completion of online tests and the assessment centre (OAC) will lead to a medical and fitness test, including eyesight, hearing, and health screening.
Pay
The initial training is 37 hours a week, with subsequent work hours of 37, 39, or 41 hours per week, reflecting your salary:
* 37 hours/week = £33,746/year
* 39 hours/week = £35,875/year
* 41 hours/week = £38,003/year
Additional benefits include 25 days' annual holiday (rising to 30 after 10 years), paid public holidays, a Civil Service pension with 28.97% employer contributions, and other schemes such as cycle to work and travel loans.
Job offers: merit vacancy
This is a merit-based vacancy. Successful candidates at the assessment centre will be placed on a merit list for 12 months, with offers made based on highest scores when positions become available. If unsuccessful as a prison officer, you may be offered an alternative role as an Operational Support Grade (OSG).
