Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon

We welcome applications for the post of Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon at Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSEFT). Full-time, substantive posts are available following new investment in the General Surgery Directorate focused on Colorectal Cancer delivery and supporting elective and emergency General Surgery services.
The Department of Colorectal Surgery provides general surgical and specialized colorectal care across all three main acute sites at MSEFT: Basildon University Hospital, Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, and Southend University Hospital. Consultant posts are available at each site. Successful candidates will be primarily based at one site but may work across different sites as needed. MSEFT is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country, serving over 1.2 million people. The colorectal department is the third largest nationally by volume of major cancer resections, with an expanding robotic-surgical program featuring three Da Vinci robots across the Trust. The department includes a complex pelvic surgery and cancer center at Southend Hospital, established Neurogastroenterology and pelvic floor services, and a complex abdominal wall service at Broomfield.

Main duties of the job
* Provide consultant-level General Surgery on-call duties (1 in 10), including on-site daytime cover, post-take ward rounds, and emergency operations, with senior support as needed.
* Perform independent elective surgeries to reduce waiting list backlogs, potentially working on Saturdays with compensatory days off during the week.
* Offer outpatient colorectal and general surgical clinics, including minor procedures.
* Specialize in laparoscopic colorectal surgery.
* Participate in 'hot' laparoscopic cholecystectomy lists.
* Provide Emergency Surgical Ambulatory Care Clinics.

Successful candidates will join a dynamic, collaborative team delivering high-quality care across the Trust. Candidates should have experience in major colorectal resections for both malignant and benign conditions. There may be opportunities to support subspecialties such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease, pelvic floor disorders, and complex abdominal wall surgery. Experience in pediatric general surgery management is desirable but not essential.
In addition to expertise in colorectal disease management, candidates should be capable of managing benign coloproctological disorders, abdominal wall, and groin hernias. Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for registration or within six months of CCT receipt at interview
* Evidence of specialist training or equivalent
* JAG accreditation for colonoscopy
* Leadership skills or training
Experience and Knowledge
* Broad training and experience in the specialty
* Experience in colorectal cancer surgery
* Management experience or training
* Experience in developing business cases for service improvement
* Experience in pediatric surgery
Research/Audit Experience
* Knowledge of research and audit principles, with ability to interpret clinical research
* Recent peer-reviewed clinical research publications

Salary: £105,504 to £139,882 per annum (pro-rata for part-time)
