Our Third-Party Works Team helps developers, utility companies and local authorities carry out projects safely on or near our 2,000 miles of historic waterways, guiding them through our Code of Practice and ensuring every scheme protects our heritage, environment and customers. The team supports hundreds of projects each year—from small local works to major infrastructure schemes— offering specialist guidance, engineering input, inspections and approvals. Their work ensures that thirdparty activities are safe, compliant and carried out without detrimental impact on navigation, towpaths, wildlife, heritage structures or public use. As a Works Engineer, you’ll manage a busy and varied caseload of third‑party engineering works taking place on or around the Trust’s waterways. You’ll work closely with developers and other key stakeholders to ensure works are delivered safely, protect customers, and avoid negative impacts on the character and heritage of our waterways. The Trust recovers fees and charges for third‑party works, which directly support our wider charitable activities, making income generation an important aspect of the role. Working Hours & Travel This is a home-based role, with occasional travel across the East Midlands to our hub spaces for collaborative meetings. This role is great for someone who enjoys variety, splitting time between home, our Trust Hubs and regular site visits, and who’s happy to work flexibly when needed, including the occasional early start, late finish or weekend. Core hours: 37 hours, 5 days a week, work pattern. You should be able to reasonably commute to one of the following hubs: Newark Role Overview This role is ideal for someone with a strong interest in engineering, an organised and accurate approach, and the ability to work collaboratively to deliver practical solutions that benefit the waterway environment. The role involves managing information, working with databases, and meeting deadlines and targets. Graduates and newly qualified engineers will be supported to build technical and negotiation skills through project work, while more experienced engineers can broaden their expertise across a varied and interesting workload. Key Responsibilities Assessing/managing/ensuring third parties undertaking engineering/construction works on or adjacent to CRT’s estate with potential to affect CRT’s interests are planned and undertaken safely. Provide technical support to CRT internal specialists teams by working efficiently to defined standards and procedures to ensure conservation and protection of the condition of the waterway assets. To ensure compliance with statutory requirements and internal Codes of Practice. To protect CRT’s interests including; customer service standards, environment and heritage. Liaise with CRT internal teams including estates, operations and environmental, to ensure the internal consultation processes are met. Promote early involvement, safety and recover costs from third party projects. Comply with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and defined standards. Report incidents, accidents and near misses. Using SAP and GIS systems, ensure all relevant information and analysis is input in a timely and accurate manner. Provide engineering advice and support to third parties and internal teams, to assist in the resolution of engineering-related situations. Contribute technical advice covering feasibility, detailed design and buildability of third party projects taking account of Canal & River Trust standards and external standards including heritage and environmental issues. Provide a point of contact for technical queries internally and externally. Respond as appropriate by providing advice and reference to relevant information sources. About You You’ll bring practical technical know‑how, confidence on site and the ability to spot risks fast and record them clearly. With strong people skills and a customer‑first mindset, you’ll thrive in a role that keeps you moving, problem‑solving and representing the Trust across the region. Skills & Qualifications Technical: Demonstrate comprehensive relevant experience of site engineering, H&S, contractor management. Proven experience of inspecting / delivering civil and/or construction engineering activities. Proven experience in assessing infrastructure risk. Demonstrable experience in cross-functional working delivering performance across range of functions. Experience of engineering in the water environment, desirable. Knowledge and understanding of historic infrastructure, desirable. Professional qualification in a relevant technical discipline, such as Degree or HND in Civil Engineering, desirable. Membership of relevant professional body e.g. ICE, desirable. General: Experience in the delivery of excellent customer service standards. Able to provide a good standard of written communication and proven ability to present technical data to non-technical audiences. Able to support other areas of the business in an appropriate manner, taking account of overall business priorities and negotiating resources as appropriate. Must hold a current valid driving licence – company car allowance will be provided.
