School Caretaker / Handyperson – Temporary Ongoing
Location: Newton Aycliffe
Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 3:00pm
Start: ASAP
Contract: Temporary ongoing
Pay
1. £12.21 per hour (until 31st March)
2. £12.71 per hour (from 1st April)
3. Weekly pay every Friday for hours worked the previous week
The Role
We are seeking a proactive and reliable School Caretaker/Handyperson to support the day-to-day maintenance, safety, and security of the school premises. This is a hands-on role requiring someone who can identify issues independently and act without needing direction.
Key responsibilities include:
4. Opening and locking school buildings and ensuring site security
5. Carrying out routine site inspections and compliance checks
6. General maintenance and minor repairs (painting, fixtures, shelving etc.)
7. Basic plumbing tasks (unblocking sinks, replacing tap washers etc.)
8. Monitoring heating, lighting systems, and replacing bulbs where required
9. Cleaning duties to maintain hygiene standards
10. Grounds maintenance including litter picking, waste disposal, and snow/ice clearance
11. Porterage duties including moving furniture and equipment
12. Assisting with alarm systems and emergency procedures
13. Carrying out health & safety checks and reporting hazards
14. Supporting maintenance of sports equipment where required
15. Responding to urgent maintenance issues and emergencies
The Person
The successful candidate will:
16. Have previous experience in a caretaker, maintenance, or similar role
17. Possess strong DIY and practical skills
18. Be proactive and able to identify tasks without instruction
19. Be organised with good time management skills
20. Have good communication and teamwork abilities
21. Be flexible and willing to support the needs of the school
22. Demonstrate a positive attitude and strong work ethic
23. Be reliable and committed to maintaining a safe environment for pupils and staff
Essential Compliance Requirements
24. Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (mandatory)
25. Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) training (or willingness to complete)
26. Safeguarding training (or willingness to complete)
27. Manual Handling training (or willingness to complete)
28. Working at Height training (or willingness to complete)
29. Asbestos Awareness training (or willingness to complete)
30. Legionella Awareness training (or willingness to complete)
