Linton Zoo Conservation Park in Cambridgeshire offers three work experience placements designed to provide insight into working for a small modern zoo and conservation organization.
Participants can develop skills across various departments including animal keeping, education, conservation gardening, and administration. There is also an opportunity to undertake research projects and dissertations, which should be indicated during application.
Supported by an experienced team, this placement offers valuable CV experience, demonstrating commitment to a career in zoo and conservation sectors. Many former volunteers have advanced into careers in animal care or further education. The zoo specializes in breeding critically endangered species.
Student voluntary placements last for 9-12 months with a 1-month probation. Placements are full-time, involving 5 days a week, including weekends. The main role involves assisting with animal husbandry.
This program targets students in further or higher education requiring a sandwich year, recent graduates seeking a career in animal care/conservation, or similar fields.
All placements are voluntary without financial support or expenses. No employment is guaranteed post-placement. A training agreement and record will be provided to ensure a valuable learning experience.
Objectives include gaining experience in zoo animal keeping, education and outreach, delivering educational talks, and undertaking research projects.
Tasks and training include animal husbandry, observations, research methods, visitor interaction, supervision, software training, and portfolio building.
Skills required include previous animal-related experience (not essential), good communication, adaptability, teamwork, independence, and physical fitness.
