South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust

Clinical Practitioner

The closing date is 26 May 2025

There are many reasons to join our team at Sunderland Eye Infirmary. Aside from our fantastic staff, we have lots of exciting developments. Our new Eye Hospital in Sunderland is taking shape and will be our new home in 2026. Sunderland will remain the region's only dedicated standalone eye hospital, strengthening our reputation across the NHS as a centre of excellence for ophthalmology care.

As one of the few specialist eye hospitals in the country, research and developing technology are key parts of our work. We encourage innovation and research in everything we do. If you share our vision for 'excellence in all that we do', we'd love you to join us!

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Sunderland Eye Infirmary (SEI) for a Band 7 Registered Adult Nurse as an Eye Emergency Clinical Practitioner (37.5 hours per week). This busy ophthalmic Emergency Department offers a 24/7 service where staff work on a rota basis to meet service needs. The team ensures the delivery of a fast, high-quality service to patients attending ED with various ophthalmic conditions. The successful candidate will need extensive post-registration clinical experience in Ophthalmology. We also offer this position as a developmental post for the right candidate, as a trainee Clinical Practitioner in a Band 6 role until training is fully completed.

Main duties of the job

You will work as an autonomous practitioner, making clinical decisions relevant to patient care and treatment/management plans, prioritising your workload to ensure timely care. You will need to handle conflict and challenging behaviour calmly and practically.

The post holder will provide SEI senior nurse site cover in the absence of the Matron and participate in the night on-call rota. You will work various shift patterns and public holidays to ensure 24/7 service provision.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in the new state-of-the-art Sunderland Eye Hospital opening in 2026.
