The National Risk and Resilience Department (NRRD) are seeking applications from enthusiastic, flexible and motivated individuals with an interest in developing new skills for Paramedic positions within the full time Special Operations Response Teams.
The purpose of SORT is to save lives, increase survival, improve clinical outcomes and enhance patient and staff safety through the provision of specialist paramedical care. SORT extends NHS reach into challenging and high-risk environments to provide direct access to patients, undertake clinical assessment, triage, initial treatment and extrication while operating where no other responding agency can provide clinical care, ensuring a smooth transition for patients into wider NHS care. The Teams attend around 9000 emergency calls annually.
The Role
SORT Paramedics must be HCPC registered with a minimum of 2 years post registration frontline experience and maintain a high level of clinical competency. Additional duties include support to multi‑agency operations and potential major incidents. SORT paramedics are also required to undertake the following operational duties as part of their role:
* Hazardous materials
* CBRN
* MTA
* Safe working at height
* Confined Space
* Unstable terrain
* Water operations
* Support to security operations (Tactical medical operations e.g. Firearms)
All SORT posts include additional organisational support duties, such as crewing the SORT Response Units (SRUs). SORT personnel must undertake continual specialist training to maintain their skills.
The Person
We are looking for flexible individuals with a can‑do approach who have excellent people skills. You should have developed communication skills, both oral and written, and be able to work to a high standard using your own initiative and alongside other Paramedics and the wider operational response to incidents on behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service.
Applications are invited from existing HCPC registered Paramedics with a minimum of 2 years post registration frontline experience. Previous SORT / CBRN / NBC operations experience is advantageous but not essential, as comprehensive training will be provided.
Important – Please Note
Appointments to SORT are conditional on completing the following Scottish Ambulance Service courses: CBRNe Responder, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), NxGen CBRN PPE, Incident Response Unit, Support to police tactical firearms operations, ATV, Safe Working at Heights/Confined Space and Unstable Terrain, Swift Water Rescue Technician. A minimum level of fitness is required and assessed annually. SORT personnel must achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) level security clearance. Maintaining these skills is a pre‑requisite for continued employment.
Application and Selection
* Applications cannot be considered from persons outside the height range of 160 cm to 200 cm or outside the Scottish Ambulance Service upper safe working limit for PPE (130 kg).
* Must undertake and pass the SORT Paramedic Physical Competency Assessment (PCA) and a swim test.
* Complete a clinical OSCE, a written task, and a competency‑based interview.
* Undergo additional security vetting due to the sensitivity of information.
* Shortlisted candidates should be available 24–26 October for PCA and Swim Test; interviews are scheduled for 29–30 October at East SORT Newbridge.
