Job summary
* To provide care activities under the direction of a registered nurse or registered medical practitioner.
* To participate in the provision of needs and the implementation of programmes of care, seeking advice appropriately, and undertaking clinical activities such as minor dressings, assisting with medication administration, eye drops, working unsupervised at offsite clinics, and patient observations (e.g., blood pressure measurement, with NVQ evidence to prove competence).
* To demonstrate skills to new or junior staff members.
* To support patients, relatives, and friends.
* To undertake ophthalmology testing such as Visual Acuity, OCTs, Fields.
In pursuing these duties, the post holder will ensure compliance with the NHS Constitution.
Main duties of the job
* Promote equality and anti-discriminatory practice, contributing to the protection of vulnerable individuals from abuse.
* Prepare patients for examination, chaperoning when necessary, and assist with basic care needs (e.g., toileting, dressings, weighing).
* Set up clinical areas with appropriate equipment for each specialty, and promote, monitor, and maintain health, safety, and security.
* Perform routine administrative and clerical tasks manually or via telephone/computer.
* Maintain good communication with all disciplines within outpatient departments, ensuring respectful and dignified treatment of patients and relatives.
* Ensure patient safety and property are maintained, be familiar with emergency procedures, attend mandatory training, and adhere to security and infection control policies.
* Support the smooth running of off-site clinics without direct supervision, recognizing limitations and reporting incidents appropriately.
* Prepare for and undertake agreed clinical activities, including ophthalmology testing.

Experience
* Essential: Previous experience in healthcare as HCSW.
* Desirable: Experience working in Outpatients Department.
Qualifications
* Essential: NVQ Level 3 in Direct Care and a commitment to further NVQ units.
* Able to undertake ophthalmology skills (Visual Fields, OCTs, Visual Acuity).
Skills
* Effective communication within a multidisciplinary team.
* Ability to work effectively as part of the OPD team, aware of own limitations.
* Desirable: Ability to perform venipuncture.
Knowledge
* Awareness of current issues in nursing policies, procedures, and health and safety in OPD.
