We are recruiting for a Trainee Management Accountant who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.
This role is a key support position within the Finance division at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. You will work closely with the Management Accounts team to deliver accurate and timely financial information that supports decision-making across clinical and corporate divisions. This role involves working with financial systems, preparing reports, and assisting with month-end processes. It’s suited to someone with experience in a financial environment and a good understanding of accounting principles who is looking to develop their career within NHS finance.
Main duties of the job
* Assist in preparing accurate financial performance reports for divisional teams.
* Maintain schedules for income, invoices, accruals, and prepayments, ensuring audit trails are complete.
* Support the raising and monitoring of sales orders and invoices; resolve routine queries.
* Review and correct financial data from payroll and other sources; process journal entries for accruals and coding adjustments.
* Contribute to month-end reporting tasks, including checklists and reconciliations.
* Provide financial advice and support to budget managers under guidance from senior finance staff.
* Prepare ad-hoc reports and assist with annual budget submissions.
* Maintain organised records and documentation to ensure compliance and transparency.
* Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance financial knowledge and system skills.

Qualifications / Training
Essential criteria
* A Levels or Equivalents
Desirable criteria
* Equivalent to AAT Technician with particular emphasis on all management accounting issues to include budgetary control and costing techniques.
Previous Experience
Essential criteria
* Experience in a financial environment
Desirable criteria
* Experience in a NHS financial environment
* Studying towards AAT technician or CCAB/CIMA qualification or have equivalent experience in a degree in a relevant subject
Skills
Essential criteria
* Good communication skills, both written and oral.
* Experienced user of computer applications. In particular, having a good understanding of spreadsheets, email packages and computerised ledger systems.
* Ability to apply accounting knowledge and demonstrate analytical skills.
* Able to work as a member of a team and to perform effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
Desirable criteria
* Ability to present to non-financial audiences.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
* Understanding of management accounting issues to include budgetary control.
Desirable criteria
* Advanced level knowledge of Excel spreadsheets and experience of Oracle computer system.
* Awareness of NHS finance issues.
