CARE WORKER
Position: Care Worker
Responsible to: Registered Manager
Purpose of position
To provide personal care and support to people in their own homes in line with an agreed care and support plan.
To care for service users in non-discriminatory ways, respecting each user’s dignity, individuality, cultural and social background, and independence.
To work with other staff employed by the service and with staff from other services to provide an integrated approach to people’s health and care.
To work in partnership with users’ family members and friends involved in their care and support.
To contribute to individual wellbeing.
Principal responsibilities
In line with an individual’s plan of care and support:
1. Help with activities of daily living, e.g., getting up in the morning, going to bed at night, dressing, undressing, washing, bathing, and toilet arrangements.
2. Help service users overcome mobility problems and other physical disabilities, including the use and care of aids and personal equipment.
3. Help make a person physically comfortable by making and changing beds, tidying rooms, doing light cleaning, laundry, and emptying commodes where used.
4. Assist with eating and drinking by preparing meals, snacks, and drinks, and helping users if they cannot or have difficulty doing this themselves.
5. Contribute to specialised care plans, e.g., for people with dementia, re-enablement, or continence difficulties.
6. Help users take their prescribed medication as specified on their care plans.
7. Support the care of service users who are temporarily sick, including minor dressings, bed nursing, or help with feeding.
8. Contribute to end-of-life care as needed.
9. Promote users’ mental and physical activity through talking, assisting with activities, prompting, shopping, reading, writing, hobbies, and recreation.
10. Read and write reports, participate in staff and service user meetings, and training activities as directed.
11. Comply with the service’s guidelines and policies, including dress code, wearing of identity badges, travel, security, and safeguarding.
12. Report significant changes in a service user’s health or circumstances to the service manager.
13. Encourage and enable service users to remain as independent as possible.
14. Perform other duties as reasonably required.
