Biomedical Scientist / Trainee Biomedical Scientist

Applications are invited from proactive, motivated, enthusiastic, HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientists to join the Biochemistry Department, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. The successful candidate would be expected to hold HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist and preferably have experience in Biochemistry; candidates nearing completion of their registration portfolio may be considered as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist.

The Biochemistry department offers a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities at Worcester Royal Hospital and The Alexandra Hospital. The Department is UKAS‑accredited and recognised by the IBMS for HCPC pre‑Registration and Specialist Diploma training in Clinical Biochemistry. It is currently equipped with a variety of automated platforms including Beckman Coulter DxA 5000, AU5800, DXI 800, DXI 9000, DxC700, Sebia Capillarys 3 Tera, Sebia Hydrasys, Cobas e411, Optilite, Bio‑Flash, HM‑JACKarc, UVIKON spectrophotometer, AI micro‑osmometer and Nova Prime electrolyte analyser.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will work 37.5 hours per week and may be required to work out of hours as operationally required. The department provides 24/7 service across both hospital sites, and the successful candidate will take an active part once training is completed, including working shift system covering nights, weekends and bank holiday shifts at both sites once competent.

Travel between sites will be required.


Job responsibilities

* Undertake routine and urgent analysis of patient specimens in all five sections of the laboratory on a rotational basis using manual and automated techniques to agreed quality standards.
* Work independently with minimal supervision.
* Participate in specimen preparation and patient data input in the pre‑analytical section as required.
* Supervise trainee BMS, MLA and other staff as directed by the Senior BMS.
* Assist in research or development work associated with the provision of an efficient Clinical Biochemistry service.
* Maintain, monitor and perform QC on analytical equipment in the laboratory and at point of care testing sites.
* Act as supervisor to BMS, MLA and clerical staff in the pre‑analytical section.
* Respond to enquiries from doctors, nurses, ward staff and staff at other hospitals, providing technical advice and escalating to senior staff when appropriate.
* Maintain state registration with HCPC and fulfil professional proficiency standards as outlined by HCPC.
* Adhere to all accepted rules, procedures and laboratory health and safety policy.
* Participate in the single‑discipline out‑of‑hours rota as required.
* Take control of any health and safety events that may occur out of hours.
* Authorise results and enable electronic reporting to wards and departments.
* Monitor the quality of service delivered at all times.
* Keep abreast of new techniques and developments within the department.
* Engage in departmental quality management activities commensurate with the post.
* Apply the Pathology Directorate Quality Policy consistently to departmental activities.
* Work under direction of the departmental Quality Manager and/or Quality Leads to implement the QMS.
* Follow SOPs for all relevant laboratory procedures.
* Participate in scheduled audit activities, including horizontal, vertical, examination audits and internal audit of the QMS.
* Alert senior staff to non‑conformance to optimal or required practice and assist in implementing remedial actions.
* Maintain records for all staff indicating training received and assessment outcomes for relevant procedures.
* Engage in training activities to demonstrate ongoing competence.
* Participate in clinical audit projects.
* Perform any other duties deemed necessary to maintain an efficient Clinical Biochemistry service.
* Ensure the job description is reviewed annually and amended as necessary.


Person Specification


Experience

* Experience in all aspects of routine Clinical Biochemistry.
* Experience with automated equipment and laboratory computer systems.
* Experience working in an NHS laboratory.
* Experience in training trainee BMSs and MLAs.
* Experience with Beckman Coulter analytical platforms.


Qualifications

* Registration with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist.
* Approved BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
* Associate of IBMS.
