Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide specialist Fetal Medicine Consultant Care in Medway Fetal and Maternal Medicine Centre (MFMC) and support the on‑call obstetric rota on labour ward. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Director, within 3 months commencement of the date of appointment. This will be signed off by the Chief Executive officer and will be effective from commencement of the appointment. The job plan will be reviewed annually following the Appraisal meeting and prospective agreement that sets out a consultant's duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

The job plan will be reviewed annually following the Appraisal meeting and prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.

For a whole time contract

Direct Clinical Care (DCC): 8.5 programmed activities (on average) per week. (includes clinical activity, clinically related activity, predictable and unpredictable emergency work)

Supporting Professional Activities (SPA): 1.5 programmed activities (on average) per week. (includes continuing professional development, audit, teaching and research). Consultants will be expected to show evidence of Supporting Professional Activities at their follow up job plan meetings.

Education

All Consultants are required to provide a positive learning environment for Junior Doctors both formally and informally. All Consultants should arrange their own Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Professional Development according to the RCOG guidelines.

Administration/Managerial Responsibilities

It is necessary to maintain waiting lists, waiting times and admissions in line with the Medway NHS Policy. All Consultants should participate in the monthly departmental management meetings and be responsible for Junior Doctors fulfilling their timetable commitments to ensure a high quality service is provided.

Quality Assurance & Audit and Clinical Governance

The Trust has adopted a comprehensive Quality Assurance and Consumer Relations Policy and all staff members are expected to play their part. The Medical Audit Advisory Committee leads the audit programme through a department of one lead and three assistant staff. The Trust is closely involved with National Confidential Enquiries. Audit in Surgical Specialties is advancing rapidly with the in‑house development of a networked computerised database, which provides waiting list management and summary clinical information in addition to reporting facilities for Audit. Attendance at monthly audit meetings is required.

Annual Leave and Study Leave

Annual Leave and Study Leave is available according to national agreements. Leave must be co‑ordinated with other Consultants. Ideally no more than four senior members of staff may take planned leave at any time. Except in unusual circumstances, 6 weeks notice of annual or study leave must be notified to the Medical Staffing Manager. Until the existing on‑call rota is reviewed Consultants may not take annual leave during their on‑call week unless effective cover arrangements have been made. This will involve cancelling routine clinical work and can only be contemplated with good notice and extensive liaison.

Private study leave is only approved in certain circumstances; full details are given in the Trusts Study Leave Guidelines. A maximum of 30 days may be approved over a period of 3 years for Consultants.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full GMC registration with license to practice
* Specialist training in Fetal Medicine or high‑risk pregnancy
* Specialist registration or CCT within 6 months of interview
* Interest and experience in participating in research in Fetal Medicine and high‑risk obstetrics
* Experience of managing hypertension clinics and placental disorders clinic
* Research publications & Presentation in academic meetings


Experience

* Experience of teaching junior medical staff.
* Evidence of involvement in undergraduate / postgraduate teaching and education
* Experience of performing prenatal invasive procedures independently
* Experience in independent management of labour ward and confident about managing full range of obstetric complications
