The Mission


We are Roots. We are the reason that hundreds of thousands of gardens across the UK are looking greener than they did five years ago. Think the big garden centres own the online plant space? Check our review count.


We aren’t a fragile start-up anymore. We’re a profitable, 50-person team with a serious operation behind us. We’ve spent the last few years building a beast of an e-commerce platform and a brand that people love. But a world-class website is nothing without world-class plants to sell on it.


Now, as we expand into a brand-new, scaled-up site, we’re ready for the next chapter. We are looking for an ambitious, data-savvy Horticultural Buyer to take ownership of our supply chain, build out our product range, and find the absolute best greenery Europe has to offer.


The Role


This isn’t just about flipping through supplier catalogues and placing orders. This is about Strategy with a capital S.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you’ll be the bridge between the market trends, the spreadsheets, and the mud. You’ll be the person deciding exactly what goes into our greenhouses and, ultimately, out to our customers' gardens. You’ll shape the strategic direction of our entire plant offering, ensuring we are always one season ahead of the competition.


What You’ll Be Doing


1. Sourcing the Best Greenery on the Planet

* The Hunt: You’ll identify, evaluate, and build rock-solid relationships with new and existing suppliers. You are the gatekeeper of our quality standards—securing the healthiest, highest-quality plant stock available.
* The Science behind the Sales: You won't just guess what will sell. You’ll collaborate tightly with our market research and forecasting teams, diving into website interactions and consumer trends to craft a product range that people actually want to buy.


2. Orchestrating the Mud and the Movement

* Operational Harmony: You’ll work directly with our growing and despatch teams to make sure the stock you buy actually aligns with our new site's capabilities, production schedules, and rigorous quality standards.
* Mastering the Flow: You’ll coordinate with the stock control team to manage inventory levels like a pro. You’ll ensure accurate records and plan the most efficient intake and storage strategies for our massive new facility.


3. Being the Plant Oracle (Cross-Functional Captain)

* Connecting the Dots: You are the key link between management, the growers, and the commercial teams. You’ll keep everyone in the loop with regular updates on market opportunities, purchasing performance, and what the next \"big thing\" in horticulture is going to be.
* Closing the Loop: You’ll work hand-in-hand with our customer service team to gather real-world feedback. If a specific batch of ferns is throwing a tantrum in customers' living rooms, you’re the one who investigates and fixes the issue at the source.


Who You Are


* You Know Your Roots: You have a deep, commercial understanding of horticulture. You know what a good plant looks like, where to find it, and what it should cost.
* You Follow the Data: You don’t buy on a whim. You look at the analytics, the search volumes, and the forecasting models to make purchasing decisions based on what’s actually happening in the market.
* You’re a People Person (and a Negotiator): You know how to build long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with growers, but you aren't afraid to negotiate hard to get the best deal for the business.
* You Love the \"Boring\" Stuff: You get just as excited about a perfectly planned intake schedule and watertight stock records as you do about discovering a rare new Monstera cultivar. You know that good ops is good business.
