We’re on the lookout for a Senior Tech Dev Engineer focused on Electronics to join our product development team and help take Ooni to the next level.
In this role, you’ll play a pivotal part in shaping the next generation of Ooni products – transforming creative ideas into robust, production‑ready, high‑volume solutions.
The Role
This is a hands‑on, highly technical position where you’ll lead electronics development across the entire product lifecycle. From early breadboard prototypes and first‑pass PCB designs, through to production‑ready solutions, you’ll oversee every stage involving electronics, while collaborating closely with our manufacturing partners in the Asia‑Pacific region. Reporting to our Head of Design and Innovation you will be part of an energetic and highly ambitious multifunctional team.
This role will spend 4 days per week at our offices in Broxburn, Edinburgh.
What you’ll do
* Concept‑to‑Prototype Development: Own the process of turning ideas into physical electronic systems, from initial breadboarding to fully functioning prototype rigs.
* Specification & Documentation: Generate electronics requirements, capturing specifications meticulously and translating them into actionable design documents.
* Supplier Collaboration: Work with manufacturing partners (primarily in China) to develop solutions that can scale from prototype to production.
* Testing & Validation: Lead test programs for electronic components, ensuring reliability, compliance, and performance against our key requirements in partnership with our product testing team.
* Technical Leadership: Act as the subject matter expert for electronics within the Product team, championing best practices and the latest innovations.
* Cross‑Functional Support: Provide ad‑hoc technical input to product design engineers, product category managers, and customer experience teams to help solve electronics‑related challenges.
What you'll need to succeed
This role is ideal for a technically strong, detail‑oriented engineer who enjoys turning ideas into working prototypes and is comfortable operating across the entire product development lifecycle. You’ll thrive at Ooni if you’re a collaborative problem‑solver who enjoys working in a fast‑paced, innovative environment.
* Significant and demonstrable experience in electronics engineering, preferably in a product development environment, with proven experience taking designs from concept to production.
* BEng or MEng in Electronics, Embedded Systems, or a closely related discipline.
* A “fail‑fast” mentality – willing to test, learn, and iterate rapidly to find the best solution.
* Strong communication skills and an ability to simplify complex information for a less technical group.
* Strong understanding of PCB design principles, schematic capture, simulation and layout.
* Proficiency with Altium Designer, KiCad, or similar EDA tools.
* Experience with power delivery systems including mains, USB‑PD, batteries, and switching regulators.
* Familiarity with common embedded communication protocols (I²C, SPI, CAN, UART, etc).
* Experience designing for actuators, sensors, and control systems.
* Knowledge of lithium battery systems and battery management systems (BMS).
* Understanding of PCB design for EMI/EMC immunity.
* Ability to write and debug simple C/C++ scripts to support prototyping and proof‑of‑concept work.
* Understanding of control system design, particularly PID control algorithms.
* Hands‑on experience with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and power analysers.
* Experience with IEC 60335 (Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances).
* Experience designing for EMC compliance and IEC 61000 standards.
* Familiarity with design‑for‑manufacturing (DFM) and design‑for‑assembly (DFA) principles.
