Clinical Haematology Nurse Specialist
We are looking for a caring and committed nurse to join our Thrombosis Team as a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist. In this role you will support patients through the assessment and management of VTE, thrombophilia and anticoagulation, giving clear guidance and reassurance at a time when they often need it most.
You will work independently in our nurse-led clinics, using your clinical expertise to help patients feel informed, safe and supported. You will also be a valued resource for colleagues across the Trust, helping to promote consistent, evidence-based care.
As part of our supportive haematology team you will contribute to service improvements, education and the continued development of our patient pathways. A non‑medical prescribing qualification, or a willingness to work towards one, is essential.
Main duties of the job
* Assess patients and plan, implement and evaluate care using specialist clinical knowledge and skills.
* Act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers within the Speciality Service.
* Review patients and provide care in the hospital and community settings.
* Provide education and support to patients, carers and colleagues.
* Participate in audit, research and service development within the Haematology service.
Job responsibilities
* Perform specialist assessment of patients’ nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery using advanced clinical knowledge and skills.
* Lead clinical care by managing a patient caseload and providing expert assessment, planning and evaluation.
* Co‑ordinate and manage nurse-led clinics within the Speciality.
* Contribute towards a multi‑professional approach in the management of patients within the specialist area.
* Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives.
* Support patients and families to enable self‑management and participation in care delivery.
* Recognise changes in patients’ condition that require intervention and refer on as appropriate.
* Support, assist and encourage the multi‑disciplinary team in resolving patient problems, providing innovative models of case management.
* Lead the specialist nursing contribution to the service, ensuring delivery of high standards of patient care.
* Act as a role model and expert nurse providing specialist knowledge to colleagues through MDT meetings.
* Undertake clinical supervision of nursing colleagues individually or in groups.
* Provide leadership to the team of nurse specialists and work with the service lead to develop new roles and ways of working.
* Ensure effective use of physical and financial resources.
* Lead consultations and develop strategies for delivering effective care within a changing environment.
* Monitor health, safety and security, promoting best practice and a no‑blame culture.
* Investigate incidents/complaints where required and produce detailed reports.
* Advocate for patients and drive the development of patient‑focused education and information strategies.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse / Midwife.
* Post‑basic specialist qualification relevant to the speciality.
* Recognised teaching qualification.
* First degree.
* Research qualification.
* Masters.
Experience
* Demonstrable post‑registration experience.
* Evidence of successfully undertaking the relevant speciality at Band 6.
* Extensive clinical experience.
* Experience in management/leadership and staff management.
* Experience as a specialist sister.
* Participation in research.
Knowledge
* Specialist knowledge of haematology, thrombosis and anticoagulation.
* Understanding of audit, research and service development processes.
