Overview
Outdoor Education Instructor role at The City of Edinburgh Council – Lagganlia Outdoor Centre. Salary: £33,287 - £39,129 (pro-rata for part time). Hours: 32 per week. Lagganlia is part of the City of Edinburgh's Outdoor Learning Team and provides outdoor learning residentials for the young people of Edinburgh.
Commitment to high-quality outdoor education with access to wilderness environments enabling activities such as skiing/snowboarding, sailing, canoeing, mountaineering, rafting, climbing, kayaking, canyoning and mountain biking. Onsite facilities include archery, orienteering, skiing and high ropes.
The post offers a rare opportunity to join a professional team of outdoor educators responsible for designing and delivering engaging programmes tailored to visiting schools, with instructors given ownership to shape activity choice and location.
Responsibilities
* Design and deliver outdoor education programmes tailored to visiting schools, with the instructor responsible for activity and location choices.
* Deliver a wide range of adventures and use Lagganlia’s access to wilderness environments to provide diverse experiences (skiing, snowboarding, sailing, canoeing, mountaineering, rafting, climbing, kayaking, canyoning, mountain biking).
* Utilise onsite facilities for activities such as archery, orienteering, skiing and high ropes as appropriate.
* Ensure alignment with Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence and contribute to Learning for Sustainability targets.
* Work within the annual programme, including four weeks of staff training covering technical, educational, and whole-day school visits.
* Adapt programmes to meet weekly written deliverables from visiting schools and achieve defined outcomes.
* Maintain high professional standards and collaborate with a team of qualified outdoor educators.
Qualifications
* Wide range of outdoor National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications or equivalent is essential.
* Experience delivering pedagogy aligned with the Curriculum for Excellence and the school’s learning outcomes.
* Ability to contribute to the design and delivery of adventure-based learning across a diverse set of activities.
* PVG Scheme membership or commitment to undergo PVG Scheme check; international checks may apply if applicable.
* Ability to work in the Cairngorms National Park environment and adapt programmes accordingly.
