Role summary
As Project Manager you will be responsible for the entire scope required for successful delivery of projects including appraisal, planning, detailed design, construction, and delivery phases. You’ll deliver these by complying with internal governance and processes specifically: Project Management, Health & Safety, Commercial, Risk & Value, and Budget. You’ll matrix-manage a delivery team and engage with all key stakeholders.
Working within the Environment and Water Portfolio (ENW), with clients such as Thames Water and Southern Water, you will be responsible for the delivery of both above ground and below ground water and wastewater construction projects. Roles typically being seconded to the client, but not always.
Responsibilities
* Delivery on time within cost and to stated quality standards
* Embed sustainability principles
* Manage health, safety and wellbeing of all those engaged on the project
* Deliver within specified internal and client governance tolerances
* Ensure the relevant safety management system is employed
* Coordinate and manage contract requirements (NEC or similar) relating to design, construction and commissioning
* Collaborate with the Technical Lead to ensure excellence in Health and Safety in design
* Capture cost efficiencies during pre-construction phases without compromising scope
* Advance the project to the Investment Committee and secure capital allocation for progress
* Be accountable for expenditure and overall out-turn cost including governance approvals
* Coordinate with supply chain and procurement functions
* Ensure change control is followed and manage changes to time, cost and quality
* Active stakeholder management to clarify requirements and priorities
* Manage project risk and opportunities with mitigation measures
* Meet commercial objectives with timely reporting and information delivery
* Maintain effective communications with the client and programme team
* Manage the project programme with multidisciplinary teams and update as required
* Ensure efficient close-out of all projects
Required for the position of Project Manager
* A degree in engineering or project management
* A relevant professional qualification, preferably APM
* Full Membership or working towards membership of a relevant chartered body (MAPM, MCIWEM, MICE, MCIOB, MRICS, etc.)
* Project management experience across a range of disciplines and contracts/procurement
* Experience of managing projects within the Water and Environment Sector
* Experience in practical application of contract terms
* Excellent written and oral communication
* NEC contract experience
* Ability to foster collaborative working relationships
* Experience of working client-side for utilities companies is advantageous

About the Business Unit: The Advisory and Programme Delivery (APD) unit delivers management services across Built Environment, Defence, Energy, Water, Transportation, Education, Health and Care sectors. The Environment and Water portfolio delivers project, programme and commercial management services to regulated water/wastewater clients and the Environment Agency, across the project lifecycle.
Our environment and water portfolio works with clients on projects ranging from small to major programmes, with significant cost and scale, including work that can exceed £0.5 billion.
