Job overview

As the ward resident doctor, you will be responsible for providing day-to-day junior medical input under the supervision of the patients’ Responsible Clinician and in collaboration with the ward multidisciplinary team.

Derby Ward is a men’s low secure admissions ward, and Solaris Ward a men’s low secure rehabilitation ward, within the low secure unit of West London Forensic Service

This is an excellent opportunity for the postholder to gain experience in inpatient forensic psychiatry in a Trust with multiple possible opportunities for further career development.

Main duties of the job

The duties include clerking in new admissions; working with the multidisciplinary team to provide day-to-day psychiatric and physical health care of a high standard to a patient group with complex needs; providing physical healthcare with access to our primary healthcare team as needed; reviewing patients in seclusion; participating in and minuting team meetings; preparing CPA reports; and contributing to the ongoing assessment, management and monitoring of the ward patients.

Although the post does not include routine participation on the hospital on-call rota, the post holder can be supported to contribute to the rota by choice.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. MBCHB or equivalent medical qualification
2. Shall have completed at least 4 years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
3. Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment
4. Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice including: •good clinical care •maintaining good medical practice •good relationships and communication with patients •good working relationships with colleagues •good teaching and training •professional behaviour and probity delivery of good acute clinical care

6. Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria

7. Acute care safe: up-to-date basic life support training. Out of hours experience relevant to the post.
8. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to write comprehensive clear reports for multiagency professional networks
9. Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 (Amended 2007) and other relevant legislation. Contemporary knowledge of the treatment of mental illness and personality disorders.
10. Clinical judgement: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
11. Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job.

Language Skills

Essential criteria

12. All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, which could be demonstrated by one of the following: •applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English •applicants have scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent equal to those required for recruitment to MMC specialty training programmes.
