Overview
Dispatcher role at Police Service of Northern Ireland. Hours of work: Full-Time. Location: Greater Belfast, Armagh, Maydown. Closing Date/Time: September 22, 2025, 3:00pm. Reference Number: HRDISP2725.
Responsibilities
* Assist in providing a multifunctional service to the public by determining the response to calls for service.
* Allocate the most appropriate resource when required using radio, telephone and computer aided dispatch systems.
* Communicate with police officers (from Constable to Inspector level) to brief officers regarding incidents and tasking to scenes.
* Work shifts, which will include a combination of early, late and weekend shifts, with possible overtime as necessary.
* Provide timely and accurate information to support incident response, maintain logs, and coordinate with support services as needed.
Main Activities
* Ensure calls on Command & Control are dealt with appropriately within timescales, in line with National Call Handling Guidelines and Standards and Service procedures.
* Prioritise calls and assess incident resource requirements; deploy resources as required and inform callers of delays where applicable.
* Identify threat, harm or risk to officers, staff and the public; perform risk assessments and determine when specific resources (e.g., dog handler, firearms) are required.
* Carry out primary and secondary searches and checks; record information accurately on logs; monitor incident progress until response team arrives and takes control.
* Resourcing custody cells when arrests are made; brief Supervisors/Managers and coordinate with Fire and Ambulance services as needed.
* Brief Supervisors/Managers on high-risk calls and escalate to Incident Co-ordination Centre as required.
Qualifications & Essential Skills
* Essential: 1 year of experience in a customer services or contact centre environment (including handling escalated or complex calls; determining appropriate actions).
* Ability to identify customer needs through questioning; manage expectations in line with procedures; accurately recording call information (minimum 26 words per minute).
* IT literate with Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
* Must have access to transport to fulfil responsibilities and complete PSNI Dispatcher training course.
