Overview

Biomedical Scientist/Specialist BMS Histopathology, Band 5/6. 37.5 hours per week. The closing date is 12 May 2026.

The Trust provides a comprehensive range of general acute hospital services and community healthcare; we are currently working with the Commissioners to help develop a comprehensive service for the whole of Cumbria.

We are looking for a competent and professional HCPC registered BMS with NHS experience to work in the Histology Department based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. This is a temporary position working 37.5 hours per week for 12 months.

The post holder will work alongside other BMS and Laboratory Support Staff to provide an efficient service.


Main duties

The main duties of the job are to carry out and supervise technical and scientific work in a section of the laboratory under the direction of the biomedical scientist team manager. Ensure prompt processing of patient specimens including analysis, utilising highly complex automated analytical equipment, manual methods, specialist and complex testing. Perform laboratory procedures effectively, rotating through the sections of the department, to provide a comprehensive pathology service as an aid to effective diagnosis and treatment of patients. Specialist knowledge/qualifications are required for the band 6 role

The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

Standard Check: £21.50 + Administration cost of £6.50 = £28.00. Deducted from salary over following 4 months or one off payment.

Enhanced Check: £49.50 + administration cost of £6.50 = £56.00. Deducted from salary over following 4 months or one off payment.

Qualifications

* BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
* HCPC registrations
* Essential IT skills (EITS) or equivalent.


Knowledge

* Underpinning theory of laboratory practice in area of chosen discipline.
* Laboratory health and safety, COSHH, and risk assessment.
* Continuing professional development with portfolio.
* Equality legislation and best practice.


Experience

* NHS experience working in a histology laboratory
* All areas of chosen discipline.
* Supervision and training.
* Technical audit


Skills

* Practical laboratory skills.
* Able to use initiative appropriately within a team.
* Ability to analyse work to determine compliance with standards.
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
* Good organisational skills.
* Ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines.
* Good hand/eye co-ordination.
