Overview
First Engineer for HSC RoRo Passenger Ferry. Department: Engine. Employment Type: Contract. Location: Shipboard. Embarkation ASAP. Contract: 2 months on/off. Requires experienced candidate with all valid Certificates and strong references.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced FIRST ENGINEER for the RoRo Passenger HSC vessel CECILIA PAYNE. Immediate embarkation; contract terms as stated. Must have all valid certificates and good references/recommendations.
Key Responsibilities
1. To act as the Chief Engineer's representative during Engine Room watch, supervise the on-watch team, ensure watches are carried out properly and orders followed, perform routine rounds of machinery and steering gear spaces, observe and report malfunctions, and follow emergency procedures while on watch.
2. Operate and maintain the Main Engine and associated Auxiliary Engines.
3. Execute maintenance, operation and repairs in the Engine Room.
4. Ensure seaworthiness of the vessel in the Engine Department and maintain adequate stock of spare parts and consumables on board to cover planned and unplanned maintenance.
5. Delegate work to Oilers and Wipers and supervise safe handling of all machinery and safety systems.
6. Maintain familiarity with lifesaving, firefighting and pollution prevention equipment and keep logs of watch operations and conditions.
7. Assist lower-ranked Engine Officers in familiarising with the Engine Room, Control Room and equipment.
8. Contribute to onboard operational plans in line with technical, safety and procedural specifications and coordinate with Hotel Department to minimise operational impact during maintenance.
9. Report completed maintenance to the Chief Engineer and Staff Engineer for entry into the planned maintenance system.
10. Operate diesel generators, emergency diesel generator, emergency fire pump, purifiers and air compressors.
11. Maintain care and maintenance of engine room safety equipment and ensure proper operation of fire and watertight doors.
12. Carry out fuel and ballast operations per Company procedures and prevent marine pollution. Ensure stability and stress conditions stay within safety limits.
13. Perform technical maintenance and repairs inside and outside the Engine Room, including but not limited to propulsion machinery, generators, thrusters, stabilisers, lifeboats, fire systems, ventilation, sea/chest systems, steering, water distribution, and related equipment.
14. Keep Chief Engineer and Staff Engineer informed of problems or deficiencies that may affect safety or ship operations.
15. Ensure compliance with Company, Public Health, National and International standards; report any non-compliance.
16. Maintain and update Engine log books and related records (Oil Record Book, Waste Water, Ozone Depleting Substances, Oil to Sea Interfaces, Marine Fuel Sulphur, etc.).
17. Monitor subordinates’ working/rest hours and overtime in line with Company requirements and ILO/MLC.
18. Enforce regulatory and Company policies including ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, and related safety and environmental standards.
19. Lead, train and develop subordinates; conduct reviews, coaching and performance management.
20. Maintain grooming and professional standards and uphold safe, professional conduct within Engine Department and across shipboard operations.
21. Perform all other duties as assigned.
Reporting Structure
1. Reports to the Staff Engineer.
Education/Experience/Qualifications
1. Valid STCW95 certification.
2. Valid CoC A-III/2.
3. Appropriate certification as required by regulations.
4. Extensive experience in subordinate positions and on-board passenger ships in a similar role; preferable experience with Wartsila engines.
5. Physically and medically fit; high moral integrity.
6. Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses are appreciated.
7. Proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings and manuals.
8. Alaska experience is a plus.
9. Public Health, Coast Guard and Port State Control experience is recommended.
Language and Computer Knowledge
Language: Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. Ability to communicate instructions clearly and engage with guests and crew. Additional languages are beneficial.
Computer knowledge: Good working knowledge of AMOS and Microsoft applications.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Required to stand, walk long distances, and perform bending, climbing, and stair use. Lift or push up to 50 lbs. Overtime and irregular schedules. Work in Engine Control Room and engine spaces with noise and demanding environment.
