Overview The Modern Languages Department at Bullers Wood School is large, very well resourced and extremely successful. We are able to offer French and Spanish Our department’s philosophy is very clear. We aim to promote the enjoyment of and proficiency in language learning. We want each student to achieve the highest possible standard in the languages studied and we try to create an interest in, and openness towards, other countries and cultures through organising many different links and events. Facilities Languages are taught in specialist rooms. The Sanderson building contains 9 teaching rooms and an ICT suite, offering 30 PCs with extensive subject specific software. There are interactive whiteboards or screens in all teaching rooms which are very actively used. Staff All staff within the Department teach at least two languages specialising in one at KS5. It is the policy of the Department that all staff teach across the age and ability range. In order to develop fully the potential of all members of staff, the Department meets regularly for in-service training sessions to keep in contact with new developments and, more importantly, to share ideas and best practice. Staff are also able to attend INSET organised by external providers where this benefit both the individual and the Faculty. Key Stages 3 & 4 All students study two languages during Year 7 and 8 (Spanish and French) except a very small number of students who receive extra support with literacy. Most students continue their study of at least one language to GCSE following Edexcel specification. Students achieve fantastic GCSE results which are always well above the national average. In 2024 students achieved the following results: French, 74% grades 9-4 and 37% grades 9-7. Spanish, 80% grade9-4 and 24% grades 9-7. Sixth Form French and Spanish are taught to A level using the Edexcel board. In 2023 A Level students achieved the following results in French, 89% AC and in 2024 A Level students achieved the following results in Spanish, 80% AC.
