Locum Consultant Dermatologist
The closing date is 15 April 2026.
The Dermatology department at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust is looking for a Locum Consultant Dermatologist to join the team on a 12‑month fixed term basis. You will support out‑patient and in‑patient clinics across three sites within the Trust (Harlow, Epping and Bishops Stortford). Out‑patient review and advice constitute the majority of the workload. There are no designated inpatient dermatology beds, however specialist advice is given on in‑patients when requested. You will support the general dermatology pathway including paediatric patients and patients on systemic therapies – high‑risk drugs. The post holder will conduct out‑patient clinics for patients referred to PAHT, which will include conducting minor procedures, diagnostics or the management of complex patients. There is a requirement to understand the national cancer targets to support pathways.
Main duties of the job
* You will work with professional colleagues and local managers to ensure the efficient running of the service and will share with other practitioners the medical contribution to management.
* Supervise junior doctors, dermatology clinical nurse specialists and other non‑medical prescribers.
* Train clinical nurse specialists and junior doctors in minor dermatological surgery and in the prescribing of systemics. Create a robust training plan to evidence training. Ensure only patients suitable for treatment in secondary care remain in secondary care.
* See patients in an out‑patient setting referred on a CWT or routine pathway for diagnosis, management and treatment.
* Support patients along the cancer pathway for their first appointment, minor operation clinics, breaking bad news and surveillance.
* Develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients. Demonstrate excellent team‑working skills with the ability and professional attitude to work well in a multi‑professional team.
* Deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
* Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.
* Provide high‑quality inpatient and out‑patient services which are coordinated and person‑centred to the population served by PAH.
* Engage fully in the development of services to meet the anticipated future challenges of the ageing population, lead on and drive forward innovations within the service area, and ensure compliance with the ICB exclusion criteria for treatment.
* Conduct advice and guidance, and cover the rota for requests from inpatient medical or surgical wards for specialist input.
