Personal Assistant for a Child with Disabilities

Job description

Personal Assistant for a Child with Disabilities to be directly employed by family under a Direct Payment arrangement.

Location:

1. Llansillin
2. £12.60 per hour

We are supporting a family to recruit a Personal Assistant to provide support for their child for 6 hours a week on a 1:1 basis, during school time and holidays. With the view that these hours will continue to increase to build towards overnight stays to enable the family to have a night of respite.

Child’s profile:

I am 17 years old and have a diagnosis of Global developmental delay.

I am non -verbal and do not use Makaton or sign language to communicate, so I am reliant on my Mum and Dad understanding my wishes and feelings, the more you get to know me the easier this will be.

I need support with all of my basic and personal care needs. I love having a shower and I am happy just standing under the water, but I do need to be supervised and prompted to wash.

I love having stories read to me at all times of the day, but I also like having stories read to me when I am trying to go to the toilet at home. I have lots of books at home.

I do need to be reminded to go to the toilet throughout the day.

I am the happiest when I am outside with Mum and Dad and I always want to be out in Dad’s buggy or the land rover.

I can be repetitive and persistent at times, especially if I am wanting to do something specific, like Dad taking me out and watching him on the farm.

I like going for drives in the car, it doesn’t matter where I go, I just like being in vehicles.

I will let you know if I am not happy with something, usually by waving my hands and saying ‘no’.

I enjoy going to see my Nain after school, this is part of my routine.

I like having my routine and it can unsettle me if this is changed.

I love going for walks in fields and going to the seaside with my Mum and Dad – this is our happy place because I can walk freely on my own with no restrictions or worries.

I do need support when I am near a road because I do not have any road safety awareness.

I do not like the sound of coughing or laughing, this can unsettle me.

About you:

Desired:

You will have the experience of providing support for children and young people with additional needs.

Some experience of challenging behaviour desired. This is not a regular occurrence however I can show my frustration if I am not happy with something.

If relevant training needs are identified, this will be addressed and sourced by the family who you are employed by.

Applicants must be enthusiastic, caring and passionate about making a difference to children and young people’s lives, as well as wanting to build a relationship with the family.

The support will initially be 6 hours a week for an introductory period for you, me and My Mum and Dad to build confidence and a trusting and understanding relationship. These hours will then increase to allow for socialising opportunities and accessing the community, with the end goal being longer days and possible overnight stays within my home so that My Mum and Dad can have some respite. This will also prepare me for adult services and make it easier for me gain the skills to meet and be comfortable with new people.

The days and times can be discussed with my Mum and Dad with flexibility on both sides.

Essential:

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

Full UK driving licence and have access to your own vehicle.

All applicants who are employed by families must undertake a new enhanced DBS check which will be funded and carried out by the Powys County Council DBS Team.

About the role:

The support will include supporting me after school and becoming familiar with my routines, interests, likes, dislikes and understanding my behaviour and needs.

Support after school or weekends will in time include taking me out in the community to give me the opportunities to socialise and build my confidence in new environments. It will also encourage and support me to get out of the house more often and promote life skills like shopping, baking, communication and meeting new people.

The support will begin with 6 hours per week to build the knowledge, understanding and relationship with me and my family, to then work towards and build up to longer periods of support and possible overnight stays. This will make sure Mum and Dad can spend time together, have some rest and I can remain in my home where I feel safe, secure and comfortable in,

This position will be under a direct payment arrangement, and your employer will be the family (you would not be employed by Powys County Council directly).

You will be employed directly by the family of the child(ren) you support. Powys County Council are not responsible for employment; we are solely acting as an advertiser for PAs.

If desired, please inform the IDS team if you would like to be contacted on behalf of other families looking for support in future. Your information will be held by the IDS Team unless you request us to remove it.

For more information, please contact the Team Coordinators Kielfhinn Barnard or Fiona Eaton via email or tel 01597 826604 quoting the reference 314203
