Job Purpose:
Providing in-house legal support and assisting in all aspects of the work of Munich Re UK Branch, Munich Re UK Services, the Munich Re UK IT hub and various other insurance and insurance intermediary companies within the UK group (both life and non-life business) where input or advice of a legal nature is required.
Key Responsibilities:
In each case, supporting colleagues within the UK Shared Legal Team or (as appropriate) acting independently:
1. To draft and to advise on the drafting of all types of contractual or other legal documentation.
2. A key part of the role will be support of: procurement; outsourcing; IT and supplier contracts and various intra-group agreements.
3. Opportunities to be involved in drafting a range of insurance and reinsurance documentation.
4. To advise on aspects of the law of England and Wales, as required, and to respond to queries of a legal and regulatory nature, including carrying out legal research.
5. To liaise with Munich Re internal and external clients on legal matters, as required.
6. Working closely with the UK shared Data Protection team, to ensure compliance with privacy laws.
7. To maintain a good working knowledge of the law of England and Wales as relevant to support the work of the Legal Department.
8. Note that the Legal team is a “shared service” function, which provides legal services and support to various internal clients (including the life reinsurance branch, the UK service companies, and to various non-life insurers and intermediaries).
General Duties and Tasks:
9. To assist in drafting and negotiation of all types of contractual documents, including supplier and outsourcing contracts; IT/IP agreements; confidentiality agreements; and to review and comment on correspondence or other documentation where a legal view is required.
10. Depending on relevant experience, to assist with the drafting of insurance/reinsurance contracts.
11. To advise generally on issues of legislative and regulatory compliance, as required.
12. To advise on changes in law or regulation (including participation in government or regulatory consultations).
13. Liaising with internal and external clients, and external lawyers, as required.
14. To assist with company secretarial work of the Munich companies in the UK, as required.
Plus any additional duties and responsibilities that may reasonably be expected to be undertaken in accordance with the role.
Key Skills and Experience:
15. Competence in drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts (e.g. insurance agreements; supplier and outsourcing agreements; NDAs; software licences).
16. Good general knowledge of business and commercial law issues.
17. Some knowledge of the insurance and/or the financial institutions sector (note that internal clients include both life and non-life reinsurers and insurers/MGAs within the Munich Re Group and that all work is in an “insurance context”).
18. Above all, a pragmatic and flexible approach. The candidate would need to be able to make a real contribution, within a short time, to the work of a small but busy team which deals with a very wide range of legal matters.
19. Excellent legal research skills.
20. Able to communicate information and ideas clearly and articulately both in oral and written form. Uses appropriate language, style and methods depending on audience and the purpose of communication. Able to convey complex information clearly. Anticipates the information that others will need.
21. Some prior “in-house” experience (e.g. with an insurance/reinsurance company).
22. Some knowledge of company law.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
23. Qualified Solicitor / holder of current certificate to practice English law.
24. At least 2 years PQE practising as a solicitor in a relevant field of law (whether in-house or within a law firm).
