Defra group Commercial is looking to appoint an Assistant Commercial Officer to the Monitoring And Related Services (MARS) commercial team within our Environmental Goods and Services spend category. This role provides key support to the team and may include leading procurements. It is ideal for those starting a career in commercial/procurement or building on existing experience.
Defra Group Commercial (DGC), part of Defra, the central Government Department, is responsible for growing the rural economy, improving the environment, and safeguarding animal and plant health. DGC provides commercial services to organisations within the Defra Network.
This role requires assisting customers and commercial teams to deliver value effectively and innovatively, meeting customer outcomes and Spending Review targets.
The post involves awarding and monitoring supplier contracts in line with Defra’s policies, ensuring value for money, and applying Commercial DNA principles.
Key activities include reviewing requests, advising on policies, and providing commercial guidance. The role involves engaging with colleagues nationwide to build the Commercial network within Defra and beyond.
The Environmental Goods and Services category manages numerous scientific commercial agreements, mainly low- to medium-value projects. The role is pivotal in ensuring efficient procurement and excellent customer service.
The Assistant Commercial Officer reports to a Senior Category / Commercial Officer and supports project delivery, procurement, and contract management, contributing to improved ways of working and efficiency.
You will:
1. Support project and procurement delivery, providing specialist input to improve processes and support business change.
2. Explain commercial guidance to operational teams to ensure compliance and facilitate collaboration.
3. Stay updated on legislation and best practices to inform priorities.
4. Maintain effective relationships with operational teams and customers to understand issues and respond effectively.
5. Support team members to deliver results on time, within scope, and budget, supporting environmental goals.
6. Manage resources efficiently using electronic sourcing and contract management tools.
7. Contribute to category plans and develop market knowledge.
8. Provide administrative support to the team to ensure efficient operations.
9. Support contract delivery to identify and manage sustainable impacts and opportunities.
The post-holder will be accountable for:
1. Providing daily advice on straightforward commercial issues and governance, contributing to savings targets.
2. Assisting with complex procurements by researching, analyzing, and supporting sourcing strategies and market engagement.
3. Preparing tender documents, managing supplier queries, and supporting evaluations.
4. Supporting contractual interactions and managing key supplier relationships.
5. Participating in stakeholder meetings and maintaining accurate information in systems.
6. Continuing professional development to enhance commercial skills and support category planning.
