Job Description

Job description:

Role Overview

As a Trainee Leakage Technician at WT, you will take your first step into a rewarding career in the water industry. Working under the guidance of an experienced Team Leader and mentor you’ll receive full training and one-to-one support to develop the skills required to detect leaks on clean water networks, reduce water loss, and support the delivery of regulatory targets. You will learn the principles and techniques of using specialist acoustic equipment and data-driven techniques. Working alongside experienced technicians, you'll develop the skills and knowledge needed to support WT's leakage reduction targets and protect vital water resources.

The role requires flexibility in working hours, including both day and night shifts, and may involve occasional travel within the region.

Key Responsibilities

· Learn to detect both proactive and reactive leaks on the clean water network using a combination of techniques including acoustic listening, noise logging, step testing, and flow monitoring.

· Assist in assessing, diagnosing, and determining the most appropriate solutions to reduce leakage.

· Attend excavation sites with R&M teams to assist with pinpointing leaks.

· Support delivery of leakage reduction within District Metered Areas (DMAs), contributing to company and client KPIs.

· Ensure Health and Safety standards are always maintained on site.

· Complete general administrative tasks including electronic timesheet submissions, weekly vehicle checks, and defect reporting.

· Build positive relationships with colleagues, contractors, and clients through professional and effective communication.

· Shadow and support experienced technicians to develop hands-on knowledge of leak detection equipment and data analysis.

· Over time, assist with mentoring junior or assistant team members.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

· Prior experience in a similar role is useful but not required – full training in water network hydraulics, leakage detection, and reporting will be provided.

· Keen to build knowledge of utility tracing, noise logging, and pressure/flow data capture.

· Able to work effectively under pressure and manage competing deadlines while maintaining a high standard of work.

· Practical, problem-solving mindset with a flexible, cooperative attitude.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and in a physical, hands-on environment.

· Customer-focused with the ability to maintain positive working relationships.

· Confident using handheld devices or tablets to report findings accurately.

What We’re Looking For:

* A willingness to learn and work outdoors.
* Full UK driving licence.

Why Join Us?

* Full training including our EUSR-approved course.
* A meaningful role in protecting clean water.
* Routes into technician and team leader roles.
