Overview
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra-low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA / telemetry systems would be beneficial. Working within the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. As part of our Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet our commitments to net zero carbon. You will be part of a team that manages, develops and maintains our electrical engineering standards, including our electrical safety rules, for our electrical systems and equipment, which includes HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites. You will help develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment. You will also be required to hold a national incident response role which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
Team
You will join the MEICA Engineering Standards team in Standards and Engineering, part of the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering department, within the Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The team provides technical standards, management and leadership across a range of mechanical, electrical and control system activities and works collaboratively across the organisation.
Responsibilities
* Manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules, for electrical systems and equipment (HV and LV power systems and control systems) within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on electrical systems and equipment.
* Provide technical engineering leadership and support as part of the organisation’s Technical Authority to meet objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and net zero commitments.
* Participate in a national incident response role which may operate during normal hours or out of hours.
Experience / Skills Required
* A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Strong knowledge of control systems, including the application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry / SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in developing and delivering Safe systems of work, risk assessments, and method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Risk-based maintenance philosophies with application of FMEA, reliability concepts and processes.
* Drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, team working and communication skills.
Qualifications and Membership
* UK Driving licence (role specific).
* Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and registration as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or working toward registration with a realistic prospect of becoming chartered within 12 months.
