Job summary

At North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, we believe in research and innovation to find the best patient-centred treatment solutions for our patients.

We are looking for dedicated Consultants with a passion in providing outstanding inpatient and outpatient haematology services across our acute hospitals, Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

Located in Cambridgeshire, the historic towns of Peterborough and Huntingdon have been transformed by town development schemes bringing improvements in housing, education, and employment. Both hospital sites are accessible by road or train within easy commute distance from London, Cambridge, Leicester or Birmingham.

By joining a supportive multidisciplinary team, you will work collaboratively to deliver Consultative Haematology services to Outpatient clinics, the Day Unit, and Inpatients with both malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders. You will offer specialist support to other hospital clinicians and general practitioners, provide Laboratory Haematology cover while enjoying a high level of autonomy and support.

Our Haematology services have strong collaborative links with Cambridge University Hospitals in offering level 3-4 haematology services. A dedicated Haematology Research Fund is available to support laboratory-based research projects.

We are committed to supporting your career, and to value skills and initiatives. We respect your wellbeing, and we are open to flexibility in your working patterns.

Main duties of the job

The job plan is anticipated to contain 10 programmed activities, 8.5 PA's of direct clinical care and 1.5 SPA's per week. You will be required to complete 8 sessions at Peterborough City Hospital and 2 sessions at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. We are open to consider alternative job content on a personal basis.

You will be joining the Consultant rota on a 1:6 basis for both laboratory and clinical haematology services. At weekends, you are expected to conduct daily ward rounds at Peterborough City Hospital to expedite clinical decision-making and allow prompt discharge of the patients. Daily review and authorisation of blood films (usually less than 10 per day) is also expected.

You will manage clinical haematology referrals from clinical colleagues from other disciplines, as well as dealing with inpatient referrals, Choose and Book referrals, and advice and guidance from general practitioners.

You will enjoy working in our laboratory at Peterborough City Hospital featuring a state-of-the-art equipment for blood count analysis, coagulation studies and flow cytometry.

You will work collaboratively with the biomedical scientists and other member of the laboratory staff to maintain a high standard of performance.

If you like to find more about the role and organise an informal visit, we are welcoming you to contact Dr Alexis Fowler, Consultant Haematologist on Tel: 01480 363 534 or 01733 678 428 or Email: alexis.fowler@nhs.net
