About the Role

The Senior Electrical Engineer will be based at our Barnstaple site and will take technical ownership of the electrical design and development of complex defence products, ensuring compliance with performance, safety and quality standards. This role allows for flexible working.
The salary for this role is up to £62k, depending on experience.
Responsibilities
* Lead the design, analysis, and implementation of advanced electrical systems and components for defence applications (sonar, communications, power distribution, and control systems).
* Take technical ownership of electrical designs, ensuring compliance with performance, safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards, including MIL-STD, DEF STAN, and other regulatory requirements.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate electrical subsystems into complex defence platforms (ships, weapons systems, communications equipment), ensuring functional compatibility and performance.
* Conduct and oversee testing, validation and qualification of electrical systems under military operating conditions to verify reliability, durability and mission‑readiness.
* Lead design reviews, provide technical guidance, and mentor junior engineers to develop capability within the team.
* Produce and approve detailed technical documentation, including schematics, design reports, test plans and certification evidence.
* Identify and manage technical risks, ensuring robust mitigation strategies throughout the development lifecycle.
* Provide expert support for diagnosing and resolving electrical system issues in both development and in‑service equipment, including upgrades and obsolescence management.
Qualifications and Skills
* Experience in the design and manufacture of complex electrical systems.
* Methodical and systematic approach to problem‑solving, breaking down complex issues and providing robust, innovative solutions.
* Technical leadership in electrical design, ensuring compliance with MIL‑STD, DEF STAN and other relevant standards.
* Lead and mentor junior engineers, fostering technical capability and knowledge sharing within the team.
* Plan, manage and execute technical assignments, ensuring delivery to time, cost and quality targets.
* Engage confidently with internal and external stakeholders, presenting technical solutions and influencing design decisions.
* Proficient in using an electrical CAD tool (Zuken E3.Series preferred; also SolidWorks Electrical, EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, CATIA Electrical, Siemens NX Electrical, RapidHarness or similar).
