Senior GIS Analyst (Fixed-Term)
Reference: APR20254613
Expiry date: 22:59, Tue, 10th Jun 2025
Location: RSPB UKHQ - The Lodge
Benefits: Pension Scheme, Life Assurance Scheme, 26 days' Annual Leave (pro rata)
Would you like to use your interest in spatial data to help one of Europe's largest nature conservation charities?
What's the role about?
In this role, you will be part of the team producing accurate and up-to-date spatial data for all RSPB nature reserves across the UK, including some of the most important nature sites in the country. Initially, you will use your advanced GIS skills to digitise new habitat maps and convert existing habitat maps into accurate GIS layers. You will identify data gaps and update information using remote sensing, local RSPB staff knowledge, and other data sources. Your analysis will support efforts to combat climate change and enhance wildlife habitats on reserves.
In subsequent years, you will add features such as land management and species monitoring to the data. You will be part of the RSPB's Conservation Data Management Unit, working alongside colleagues who share your interest in nature and spatial data. We value mutual learning and support. To facilitate this, you should be able to work from our UK headquarters at RSPB The Lodge in Bedfordshire or our RSPB Scotland office in Edinburgh at least once a week.
What we need from you
We seek evidence that you can perform the responsibilities listed below. Your application will be assessed more easily if you explicitly address each criterion with evidence of your relevant skills, experience, or aptitude.
Essential skills, knowledge, and experience:
* Advanced GIS skills: digitising polygons with boundary snapping, using spatial analysis tools, data quality checking, proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, scripting with Python and SQL, developing standards for feature classes.
* Designing data collection tools: developing ArcGIS Online apps like Field Maps, QuickCapture, Survey123, or Experience Builder for data capture.
* Data management: collecting and curating data according to standards, promoting good practices among team members.
* Reporting: summarising data effectively for varied audiences.
* Interpersonal skills: collaborating with busy colleagues, supporting team members.
* Time management: prioritising tasks effectively.
* Problem solving: identifying issues and developing innovative solutions.
* Remote sensing: using aerial imagery for habitat classification and mapping.
Desirable skills, knowledge, and experience:
* Knowledge of habitats: translating between Phase One, NVC, and UKHab classifications.
* Automation skills: scripting to automate reporting and maintain data integrity.
Please include evidence of these criteria in the 'Tell us about your skills, knowledge and experience' section of your application. This approach negates the need to fill out the 'Responsibilities' section of your employment history.
This is a fixed-term, full-time role for 37.5 hours per week until 31 March 2028. The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make the role permanent without further advertising, depending on business needs.
Interviews are scheduled for 30 June and 1 July 2025. For more information, contact mark.gurney@rspb.org.uk.
As part of the application, you will need to complete an application form demonstrating your skills, knowledge, and experience related to the listed tasks, structured around those tasks for easier assessment.
We are committed to creating an inclusive, diverse environment where everyone feels supported and valued. We especially encourage applications from people of colour and disabled individuals, who are underrepresented in the sector. Please contact us for additional support if needed.
