Commissioning Engineer / Technician – Substations & HV Infrastructure Contract – The Northern region Start: ASAP We're looking for an experienced Commissioning Engineer / Commissioning Technician to support HV substation and industrial power projects for a leading contractor. This is a contract role via our agency, working on the testing, commissioning and handover of high-voltage electrical systems. Role Overview You will carry out the planning, testing and commissioning of HV/LV equipment on substations and associated infrastructure. You'll verify installation quality, complete functional testing, support energisation, and deliver all documentation to client standards. Key Responsibilities Commissioning & Testing Perform pre-energisation checks and verify installation quality. Test primary plant (transformers, switchgear, CT/VTs, breakers, cabling, earthing). Conduct secondary injection, protection testing, logic checks, SCADA/RTU/PLC I/O testing. Test UPS, battery systems, LVAC/DC systems and auxiliary equipment. Witness FAT/SAT and close out snags and punch lists. Planning & Documentation Prepare commissioning plans, ITPs, RAMS and test sheets. Review drawings (SLDs, schematics, wiring diagrams) to define test scopes. Produce test packs, red-lines, as-commissioned records and handover documentation. Energisation Support Carry out cold & hot commissioning. Support energisation and post-energisation checks. Work safely under Electrical Safety Rules, PTW systems and LOTO procedures. Coordination Work closely with construction, protection, SCADA/telecoms teams and OEMs. Report progress and defects, ensuring all commissioning records are controlled and submitted. Skills & Experience Proven HV/LV commissioning experience on substations or industrial power systems. Strong knowledge of transformers, GIS/AIS switchgear, protection relays, SCADA, UPS & DC systems. Ability to read, verify and mark-up SLDs, schematics and panel drawings. Competent with test equipment such as secondary/primary injection sets, insulation testers, relay test kits (Omicron/Doble), micro-ohm meters etc. Familiar with BS/IEC standards and HV electrical safety procedures. Desirable Certifications ECS/CSCS 18th Edition (BS 7671) BESC / NG Person COMPEX/ATEX (if relevant) First Aid, MEWP/IPAF, Confined Spaces OEM-specific equipment training What We're Looking For Reliable engineers with strong technical skills, a safety-first mindset, and the ability to work independently on live substation environments.
