Key responsibilities
* Providing dental services to special care adults and young people
* Treating referred patients deemed suitable to receive treatment in primary care
* Delivering dentistry using conscious sedation techniques
* Providing dental care under General Anaesthesia if appropriately trained
* Providing expert advice and guidance to colleagues with special care patients
What you will do
As part of our community dental service, you will deliver high-quality dental care to patients who cannot access routine services due to physical, intellectual, medical, or emotional conditions. You will provide a range of clinical dental services for adults and young people described in the NHSE Service Specification in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, including visitors requiring emergency care.

Job responsibilities
Job Summary:
To provide comprehensive oral care, including unscheduled care, for vulnerable adults and children with complex dental needs, and for those requiring treatment with sedation and general anaesthesia.
Support and mentor new and existing clinicians within the Special Care team and dentists on the JFDCT program, providing training alongside the Clinical Director and colleagues within the service. The post holder will work closely with the Clinical Director and support other dentists, including Specialists in Paediatric and Special Care Dentistry, urgent care dentists and Dental Therapists.
The post holder will:
* Maintain an understanding of and work in accordance with Smile Together’s contract obligations for referred Adult and Paediatric Special Care Service
* Work in accordance with General Dental Council professional standards
* Maintain a Personal Development Plan and Continued Professional Development log
* Keep up-to-date with best practice and evidence-based guidance on topics including clinical examination, prevention strategies, radiography, antimicrobial prescribing, and management of dental conditions and trauma
* Ensure correct documentation and consent for extractions
* Maintain awareness of referral criteria and pathways
Further duties include supervising clinicians, contributing to service development, training, audit participation, and temporary duties as required by the Clinical Director. You must comply with Smile Together standards and relevant professional conduct rules.

* Experience in supporting line managers and providing feedback
* Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
* Excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities
* Ability to adapt to changing regulations, technologies, and methods
* Adherence to health, safety and security procedures and reporting frameworks
* Induction and appraisal responsibilities for clinicians in the Special Care Service
* Delivery of Special Care Dentistry services to adults; provide advice for patients under 16 when required
* Delivery of conscious sedation and GA services; collaborate with Lead Anaesthetist for Adults with Additional Needs
Other duties as required by the Clinical Director and professional leadership teams, including training, service improvement, and development of care pathways with medical and dental colleagues.
