Our Acute Paediatric team are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic and innovative physiotherapist to join our sociable and dynamic team.

The team provide therapy input in both Inpatient and Outpatients settings Monday – Saturday.

Applications are invited from suitably motivated and innovative individuals to join an energetic and evolving Therapy Team within a reputable Trust. The post holders are required to be enthusiastic and passionate about the field of therapy and must be able to work flexibly across weekends and extended hours.

The department has a strong commitment to CPD and supports staff members with development.

This post will allow you to develop a wide range of clinical, managerial, organisational, teaching and supervision skills. You will play an active role in audits and service development. We offer a well-established supervision and appraisal structure. We encourage individual progression within the Band 6 role and have a firm commitment to in-service training and CPD as well as supporting staff to attend external courses and conferences.

The Luton and Dunstable Hospital Therapy Department are a friendly, forward thinking and innovative department with a well- established Clinical Governance programme and a focus on developing staff.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard physiotherapy service within the field of Acute Paediatrics including acute paediatric wards, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Musculoskeletal Outpatients. The service works across both weekdays and weekends on a rota-basis. You will also be required to participate in the Respiratory on-call Rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Objectives & Purpose of the post

1.To perform advanced physiotherapeutic assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, to determine a diagnosis and formulate and deliver an appropriate, effective individualised treatment programme

2. To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.

3. To plan, supervise, educate and assess physiotherapy students on placement within the Acute Paediatric therapy team. Work closely with the university and comply with all standards required for the degree level qualification.

4. To participate in the development and delivery of education and training for other health professionals caring for patients with Acute Paediatric conditions.

5. To hold responsibility for own caseload and be responsible for patients with physiotherapy problems on the acute paediatric wards, maternity wards, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Musculoskeletal service. You will be working without direct supervision. Access to advice and support from a more senior physiotherapist is available if required. Clinical work is evaluated through regular clinical supervision with a Band 7 clinician, but day-to-day clinical work is not routinely reviewed.

6. Supported by the Band 7 Acute Paediatric Physiotherapy Lead, to design and undertake evidence-based audit and research projects to further own and team’s clinical practice and improve service delivery. Make recommendations and occasionally implement changes to practice or service protocols, as agreed with the Band 7 lead.

7. To deputise for the band 7 Acute Paediatric team leader as required.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Diploma/degree in physiotherapy
2. HCPC registration
3. Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendances at recent post graduate courses/ in-service trainings relevant to the speciality

Desirable criteria

4. Membership of relevant clinical interest group

Experience

Essential criteria

5. Substantive broad based postgraduate experience to include B5 rotations in a variety of areas
6. Substantive experience within Paediatrics
7. Experience of working within respiratory care adults or paediatrics
8. Experience of working within an acute hospital environment
9. Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
10. Experience of supervision of staff or students including staff appraisal

Desirable criteria

11. Rotations completed in paediatrics, respiratory, orthopaedics, musculoskeletal outpatients and elderly rehabilitation including neurology
12. Experience within the NHS
13. Experience of respiratory emergency on call and weekend working

15. Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication
16. Ability to disseminate complex information to others
17. Be able to communicate where there may be barriers to understanding
