Trainee Underwriter


1. Exciting new opportunity to take the first step towards developing a career within a leading insurance brand.

2. Full training and ongoing support provided including opportunity to complete formal insurance qualifications

3. After successful probation, this will be a hybrid role with 80% homeworking and 20% in Bristol office.




Working Hours: We’re offering you a 35-hour week with shift patterns running from Monday to Friday between 8am to 6pm and some Saturday mornings. We offer a hybrid working model which means that once you’ve completed probation, you can work from the comfort of your own home for up to 80% of the time. You'll also have the chance to extend your contractual hours up to 40 per week, with condensed working hours optional too.


Start Date: You’ll join as part of an academy cohort on 27th October

About the role

You don’t need to have worked in insurance before, we’ll teach you everything you need to know. Underwriting is all about assessing risk and making fair, informed decisions to help people and businesses get the right insurance cover. Whether it’s a family insuring their home or a business protecting its assets, you’ll play a key role in making sure they’re properly supported.


Most of your day will be spent speaking with our NFU Mutual Agencies over the phone, reviewing customer information, and deciding how best to help. You’ll be trained to understand different types of insurance, how to evaluate risk, and how to communicate clearly and confidently. You’ll also be part of a cohort of new starters, learning together through a structured training programme that includes classroom sessions, shadowing experienced colleagues, and ongoing support from your manager and team.

Recruitment process


Our recruitment process consists of a few simple steps: an online application, a friendly introduction call with a member of our Talent Acquisition team, and a skills-focused interview at our Bristol office. Interviews will be held in September, with some sessions available in the evenings for your convenience.


While the core skills and assessments are the same, at offer stage we’ll aim to match successful candidates with the team that best suits their strengths, preferences, and our business needs. Please note that while we’ll take preferences into account, we can’t guarantee a specific team placement, however we will discuss the options with you during your introduction call.

About you

We’re looking for people who are naturally curious, eager to learn, and passionate about delivering great service. You don’t need insurance experience, however you do need to be ready to work in a fast-paced environment where you’ll be making determinations, solving problems, and speaking to people every day. If you’re someone who enjoys learning new things and wants to build a meaningful career, we’d love to hear from you.

4. Customer focus – You’ve worked in a customer facing, ideally phone based role recently and know how to deliver a great experience, even when things get busy. You care about doing the right thing and getting it right for the customer.

5. Communication and teamwork – You’re comfortable speaking with people, building relationships and can adapt your style to suit different situations. You know how to build rapport and explain things clearly, working collaboratively to get things done.

6. Critical thinking and problem-solving – You can interpret information, think logically, and make fair logical decisions

7. Learning mindset – You’re curious and open to feedback. You enjoy learning new things and are keen to grow your skills over time.

8. Resilience and time management – You stay calm under pressure, manage competing priorities, and keep focused when things get busy.

9. Insurance experience (ideal) – Any previous experience in insurance will be helpful, but we’ll teach you everything you need to know if you’re new to the industry.

10. Salary £24,000-£26,000 per annum depending on experience
