Theatre Services are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated member of staff to join our team of Level II Operating Department Support Workers within our 3 theatre suites.
The role involves supporting clinical staff within the Operating Theatre environment to deliver a high quality service for the people of Walsall.
You will be required to rotate through the specialties below to gain knowledge and experience and work shift patterns including days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.
* General surgery

* Orthopaedics / trauma
* Breast surgery
* Bariatric surgery
* Obstetrics and gynaecology
* ENT and paediatrics
* Oral surgery
* Urology
* Vascular
Training opportunities available including apprenticeship for ODP training, NVQ and many internal training opportunities.
You will need to work towards obtaining the clinical health care support (QCF level 2) qualification. Maths & English at grade C/Level 2 and above are required for this post as there will be opportunities to progress your career in the future.

Key Responsibilities
1. Anticipate and prepare the theatres for use; checking all equipment is in working order.
2. Assemble and attach all specialist equipment to operating tables, camera, systems etc.
3. Prepare equipment prior to start of surgery, undertaking routine checks and reporting any defects to the Team Leader.
4. Collect patients from wards, ensuring correct identity and patient records, and accompany patients to theatre, returning patients to wards post recovery.
5. Assist in the transfer of patients from trolley to table and back, and in positioning of patients on the table to the surgeon's requirements under supervision.
6. Prepare and assist medical staff with the application of Plaster of Paris.
7. Hold limbs as directed by medical staff during patient preparation.
8. Apply tourniquets under supervision of the surgeon.
9. Move theatre lights and assist in the use of headlights as instructed by the surgeon.
10. Undertake circulating duties as and when directed by theatre practitioners.
11. Assist in the anesthetic room and recovery as directed by the theatre practitioners.
12. Undertake general cleaning duties to maintain a suitable operating environment.
13. Clean down theatre between procedures, as appropriate, ensuring thorough decontamination of theatre, equipment and instrumentation; return equipment and consumables to their storage area.
14. Ensure stock levels are maintained and all HSDU is appropriately stored for use, identifying or anticipating any problems to be reported to the team leader.
15. In the absence of the storekeeper, be responsible for ordering and storing consumables in the store room.
16. Ensure that all documentation, both clinical and administrative, is completed electronically or written correctly.
17. Responsible for cleaning the surgeon’s theatre shoes and general housekeeping duties at the end of the day.
18. Collect blood from the blood bank, take specimens to the pathology lab, ensuring correct documentation is completed and specimens are transported correctly.
