Biomedical Scientist - Cellular Pathology
Closing date: 15 May 2026.
We are looking for a suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist to join our busy cellular pathology laboratory. The role may include routine histology, dissection, immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy, neuropathology and non‑gynaecological cytology. The department processes approximately 34,000 surgical specimens per annum.
Main duties
* Transfer of histology samples
* Embedding and microtomy of histology blocks
* Staining and quality control of histology slides
* Preparation of tinctorial and special stains
* Immunocytochemistry preparation for differential diagnosis of cancer
* Neuropathology techniques (including frozen sections, bone dissection and electron microscopy preparation)
* Potential training in dissection
* Supporting junior staff on technical and work issues
* Handling telephone enquiries from nurses, clinicians and healthcare practitioners and providing technical advice
* Inventory management and accurate recording of stock receipt and issue
* Understanding and applying testing procedures, risks and informed consent processes
* Teaching and training staff in specialised techniques
* Maintaining and operating equipment used for specimen preparation and analysis
* Troubleshooting complex issues on analytical equipment
* Correct handling of specimens pre‑ and post‑analysis, including high‑risk samples
* Reporting adverse incidents to Datix (and MHRA where appropriate)
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
* UK biomedical science degree
* HCPC registration
* IBMS membership
Knowledge and experience
* More than 6 months experience as a BMS in a UK cellular pathology laboratory
* Working knowledge of a UK pathology LIMS system
* Experience with a UK QMS system accredited by UKAS or equivalent
* Proficiency in routine histology, special staining (manual and automated), frozen sections, bone dissection, immunohistochemistry across various platforms, non‑gynaecological cytology
* Neuropathology experience
* Electron microscopy preparation and scanning
Skills and abilities
* Substantial experience in all routine aspects of cellular pathology
* Experience training others in cellular pathology techniques
* Strong organisational and prioritisation skills to meet targets
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with attention to detail

Salary: £32,073 to £39,043 per annum (pro rata).
