Head of radiotherapy

Offer description

To provide strategic, operational, and professional leadership for radiotherapy services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care within a psychologically safe culture. The post holder will drive service transformation, innovation, and continuous improvement, aligning with national and regional frameworks, NHS standards, and Trust values. They will be responsible for the effective management of resources, compliance with regulatory requirements, and cultivating excellence, collaboration, and inclusivity.

This is an indicative Band 8 C post.


Main duties of the job

* Represent the Trust/service on multi-disciplinary/cross functional issues to ensure the needs of the service and patients are recognised and included in future developments: e.g. meetings of RCR, SoR, South West Radiotherapy Meetings, ODN, Regional and National Radiotherapy Managers, National project teams, user groups.

Work closely with the clinical leads across the Trust, senior nurses and managers to develop patient focused services in line with the National Cancer plan and other relevant standards, ensuring that relevant cancer standards are met.

* Cultivate a consistently compassionate, inclusive and psychologically safe culture across the Radiotherapy team which is in line with our Trust values.

Implement and monitor clinical governance structures and processes within the department taking responsibility for health and safety, clinical risk and support the monitoring of compliance.

* Be responsible for the promotion of R&D activity, horizon scan and introduce the latest developments in R&D and ensure safe implementation in line with most up to date practices.

Qualifications

* Diploma / BSc Degree in Therapeutic Radiography
* Post-graduate clinical qualification to Masters level or equivalent experience
* Post graduate teaching qualification or relevant experience
* Evidence of continuing professional development


Experience

* A proven track record of extensive strategic project / programme or operational management experience, working at senior level in a large complex environment and nationally
* Extensive experience of introducing change into an operational environment, including the safe delivery of new techniques, new facilities and equipment and improvements to patient care
* Extensive experience working across organisational boundaries to secure change; within this, a proven track record of overcoming resistance to change, conflicting priorities or polarities
* Experience of writing business cases, briefings and presentations for senior management in support of funding
* Knowledge and understanding of financial management in relation to the operational and strategic management of the services.
* Able to assess a broad range of complex information quickly and accurately e.g. finance, activity, clinical/technical data.
* Knowledge of educational and vocational career pathways with an ability to identify clinical and managerial talent and to nurture and develop individuals in their careers
* Understanding of NHSE radiotherapy policies and strategies, with a focus on current developments in national radiotherapy transformation and delivery
* Expert understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, including: IRR, IR(ME)R, ISO 9001:2000, other relevant BSI and ISO standards, professional and regulatory body reports and guidelines
* Experience of risk management and audit process

* Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate inspire and influence others
* Lead on change and apply conflict resolution skills
* Self-motivated, able to act on own initiative, to prioritise work and to meet deadlines
* Ability to work under pressure, in an unpredictable working environment, maintaining a calm and professional manner.
* Ability to be flexible and respond to staff/patient needs and to prioritise needs and change activity where required
