Children’s Services Assessment Team Manager – Social Work
Location: Children’s Services – Assessment Team - Powys County Council
Hours: 37 Hours per week
Contract: Initially 12 weeks - Potential to extend
Salary/Rate: £47 UMBRELLA (£35.78 PAYE)
Working alongside Powys County Council, We are looking for an experienced and motivated Team Manager to lead a busy Children’s Services Assessment Social Work Team. This is a key leadership role where you will drive high-quality practice, support staff development, and ensure timely, effective safeguarding responses for children and families.
About the Role:
As Team Manager, you will oversee the day-to-day running of the Assessment Team, ensuring that referrals, assessments, and child protection enquiries are managed effectively and within timescales. You will provide strong operational and practice leadership in a fast-paced environment focused on safeguarding and early decision-making.
You will support and challenge practitioners to deliver high-quality, child-centred work and ensure that risk is identified and managed appropriately.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage a team of social workers and senior practitioners within the Assessment Team
Oversee assessments and Section 47 enquiries to ensure timely and proportionate responses
Provide regular supervision, mentoring, and performance management
Ensure all assessments and plans are high quality, evidence-based, and outcome focused
Support staff with complex decision-making and risk management
Manage team performance against statutory timescales and service standards
Allocate work appropriately and monitor caseloads
Work closely with partner agencies to ensure coordinated safeguarding responses
Contribute to service development and continuous improvementWhat We’re Looking For
Qualified Social Worker with current professional registration
Significant post-qualifying experience in children’s assessment and safeguarding
Management or supervisory experience within children’s social care
Strong knowledge of child protection legislation and guidance
Confident decision-maker with good risk assessment skills
Ability to lead in a fast-paced, high-demand environment
Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skillsEssential Requirements
Recognised Social Work qualification
Current professional registration
Enhanced DBS check
